Mauro Picotto @ Mansion

Did anyone go to this last night? was dissapointed myself, pretty much all his set was minimal sadly, just when you thought he was about to turn it up a notch with tunes like New Order-Blue Monday or Komodo he took it right back down which cleared the place early on. Not sure what Muaro's game is these days, nice to see Mansion has improved a lot by opening up the front though, hoping to make it to schulz next week which should be muchos better!

he always does that crap... his stuff from back in 00-02 time frame is why i even care to listen to him...

proximus, komodo, iguana, like this like that, lizard, etc...

now that was teh good ...

he played a set that had some of that when I caught him at the old Space in 2002, but the last time i heard him spin which i think was Feb 06 in Toronto it was all techno which just makes you want to shoot yourself...

how was the sound at mansion?
Charlie Brown
Sound was okay considering the size of the room, it's never going to be as good as small rooms like space just because of the size of the place. I saw Picotto play at Gatecrasher last year and he was immense, dropped just about every 1 of his classic productions and never let up with the hard techno sound he made his name with. So I was hoping for a repeat at Mansion but for some reason he chose to bore everyone with the slow .

Jessica Simpson seemed to be enjoying it though, 1 of the few remaining at 5am!

I was there, and also was not impressed at all by Picotto's set. He started off okay, but by 3:30 he had lost it completely IMO.

By far the worst set I have heard from him. I am not sure you could call most of the he played good minimal techno, and defintely not bangin techno like he played between 2002 and 2005. Saturday was like very blah and boring tech house, even commercial crap IMO. He would drop an occasional good track here and there, but his set had no energy or flow at all, and never built into anything substantial. Seems like he is pulling a Tiesto if you ask me, by trying to satisfy the masses instead of taking any chances and playing anything even remotely earth-shattering.

As for the sound, what I've noticed is that there definitely are some areas where the sound is better and others where it's noticeably worse. Seems they just turn it up too loud for some of the speakers to take it and have not tweaked the system accordingly, which causes this to occur. Hopefully Markus does what Corsten did and requires Mansion to bring in extra sound and tweak it correctly. Either way I am confident Markus will do better than Picotto.

he probably is pulling a tiesto. minimal is not for everyone but even barring that fact, it can sound pretty amazing if you know what to play. when spooky opened up for sasha last october he played a good chunk of minimal to open up and had the place going crazy. I bet he played a lot of the really stripped down that is really not for everyone that doesn't like all the intricacies.

Trust me there was a lot of straight crap he was playing, not even minimal - much less techno. I only wish someone with more ID-ability was there to break it down for you all.

I saw Hawtin at Pawn Shop in December, and the diference in what they played is like night and day. Hawtin was dropping dark, dirty, nasty beats layered over the trippiest of sounds, in a set with lots of energy, build ups and break downs galore. Picotto was straight fluff, no substance or flow at all. I cannot believe how badly Hawtin is owning him right now, but he is.

mauro is completely a hit or miss dj..and the last few times ive seen him have been all misses..saw him a couple times a few years back at ht guvernment in toronto and he absolutely ripped the place apart. then the next time sucked and played an alrite set last year at wmc at prive....i cant see spending the money anymore to go see him
