opinions needed about a troublesome situation... (pg. 2)

I do. Two problems are that I'm a full time student double major and the availability of jobs that pay over $6/hr are very slim (most of the places around here are either factories or hiring the people that graduate with history/business/elementary ed/etc degrees and just hang around and party with their friends.)

i don't know what it is but you sound like such a . maybe i have issues , actually i'm pretty sure i have issues but godamn, put away the tissue and get a job for a week at 6$ an hour. Or con the parents , i don't know. But if only having 200$ is what you call a troublesome situtation , well grow some balls.

i don't DISAGREE with you.. but i dont think someones situation should matter to you so much... so what, he only has $200 available ATM and would like to know what he should dip his into for those $200.

No, I think I'll grow some balls. While I'm at it, I'll recap my original post.

1) I've done my homework and RTFM. I know something about music in general. (Just letting everyone know that this isn't a generic "i r n00b!1!! u gib help! wat i buy?" thread.)
2) I have $200 to buy , low end equipment.
3) Is it worth my while to buy said , low end equipment?
4) If so, in what order should I buy it?

The "troublesome situation" is not that I have only $200. It's that I don't know which parts are the most important in a very low-end setup.

I'll have to think about the extra keys vs. space thing, Nightshift. I'll prolly go with the 49.

Do what Echosystem said, the card is fine for now, get a keyboard (primary) then headphones (secondary). It will make a bigger difference (especially as a player yourself albeit of a different instrument) to be able to input the notes than being able to monitor in higher quality. Get yourself a cheap 49 key midi controller and some OK headphones. TBH, even a good pair of hifi headphones will do for someone in your starting position. Surely some cash strapped, crack starved fellow music student will sell you a decent pair when they are going cold turkey on a friday night?

I agree with echosystem, Nightshift, DJRANN, et al. - get the MIDI controller first, worry about the other things later. Look for a decent pair of used headphones if you have to. Since you are a keyboardist, I wouldn't recommend getting a 25-key controller. Go with 49 keys or more if you can afford it. If/when you want to actually play a piano piece, the 25 keys are pretty much useless. Also, you'll constantly be switching from lead to bass to drum to pads, etc. when you're auditioning sounds, so that transpose button can quickly become a minor annoyance.

Also, do a search of this forum or on google regarding mixing with headphones. There are a ton of threads out there discussing this. Just be aware that it can be done very well, but a lot of newbies (and pros) have trouble getting their tracks to sound right when mixing with headphones, so read up on it.

Good luck!

A.D.D. Version:

+1 on AKG k240s (expect to pay about $100)

+1 on a midi keyboard (USB for your current application)

I didn't get a good audio interface or monitors until a year or so after I had my headphones and a keyboard. Before the headphones and keyboard I was clicking notes into reason and using a Sony home theatre system for more than a year.

Point being, once I got the headphones and keyboard, my weak points weren't in my listening environment. It wasn't until some time later when I decided that I could improve my productions with some higher-end studio equipment.

Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I'll go ahead and get a keyboard then look for some used AKG k240s. I'm looking into the engineering coop program here for this fall. If I pick up an audio interface then, I'll be rockin'.

This is just my opinion, and some might disagree, but I'd look for NEW AKG's and a USED keyboard. I just think it'd be easier to find a used keyboard rather than a specific set of headphones.

i don't disagree... i actually strongly agree with you.. the jack for the AKG wire is proprietary technology... so if you get a used pair of these, you have no idea how they were previously treated (as with everything), so if the jack s up, you're essentially S.O.L.

Good points. Plus, with new headphones you won't have to worry about getting other people's hair/ear funk all over your head. :nervous:
