Aoki at Crobar Proves Less Than Inspiring

| quote: | The Aoki we all know and love is a crazy, vodka-wielding, crowd surfing DJ who plays the hottest “where-did-he-get-those” tracks. Right? Unfortunately, Aoki only brought the performance to Chicago’s Crobar on Friday night, and not the tunes. While he was able to rile up party goers by standing on tables and holding his bottle of Belvedere aloft like a battle flag, he also got us all cocking our heads and looking quizzically at each other. High moments like The Count Of Monte Cristal and Sinden remix of “Like This Like That” lead into “huh?” moments like Chris Lake’s “Changes.” Aoki’s body language seemed to change as well during these obviously mainstream moments. Total bummer, dude.
Here’s the thing. We can hear Daft Punk’s “One More Time” from any resident DJ worth their salt. We hear the Villains’ edit of “Around The World” from someone like Aoki. With a set that fluctuated between pandering to what he thought the Crobar crowd would like and playing his favorite jams, Aoki’s set just didn’t click.
Is it unfair to insist that someone of Aoki’s caliber stray away from mainstream songs? Absolutely not, and I insist on this even more when it seems out of character for him. We herald Aoki as a tastemaker, not a follower, and that should give him the freedom to play a bit outside of the box, especially with new album “Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles” dropping in a matter of days. Ok, we did hear the album’s edit of “Shake and Pop” with Kid Sister, but consistency is still king.
Hopefully next time Aoki graces Crobar we get a little more Uffie and a little less undistinguished when this dj-cum-rockstar shows us how to throw it down. |

| That article makes one big mistake. They assume that Aoki has been a good DJ in the past, which he never has been and probably never will be. Aoki playing a bad set? NO WAY!! |
