A lot of sites these days offer free hosting some of you guys already know for example(soundclick ,myspace) just to name a few.

One thing i noticed is when you sell a album or a single they obviously take a percentage! So imo its pretty hard to make a significant amount of profit on any of these sites.

Just wondering if any of you guys here do well on any of these free sites. Im considering paying for a host and my own domain name (since im serious about my music) and making my own site kind of like one of these guys:

each of there site uses flash and connects you to some shopping cart and so forth.

http://www.pauloakenfold.com/
http://www.jonathanpeters.com/

this way i can make close to 100% of the profits

let me know the pros and con of going the free way to host and running your own.

thanks guys.

pros: you keep all the profits
cons: no one will buy your music

record labels exist for a reason; because it is not as easy as every 15 year old tard running an internet label thinks.

Great idea, if you're already a HUGE name.

Nowadays, myspace is the way to go just to throw your name out there. If you want to go the domain route with your own site, throw me a PM. I could use some sidework. Not to sell your beats, mind you, but to have a better presence than myspace.

As far as selling your own beats, eh... not worth it for starters. I'd rather see some big sales numbers rather than profit numbers. It would honestly make me smile more. A remix I did recently got bootlegged a shload, according to the guy that distributed it. It's funny what you'll find if you search your artist name on google.:toothless

I think ill go the independent label route for a while and then get a domain in near future.

It hard to give music away, much less sell it. In order to sell anything on Soundclick or Myspace, you have to be very established and well-known. Indie bands and some DJs can do well selling their music directly, because by playing live they are promoting themselves. For up and coming EDM artists, labels are still the way to go. Since we hardly ever get out of the studio, or house even, no one knows who we are. Even a small label can help get your name out into the mainstream market. Beatport, Audiojelly, and the other EDM portals are where people shop for music, period.
