another dual monitor question

| I'm thinking of getting another 26 inch screen. Would i need a second video card to run something so big even tho i don't play games ? My current card is a nividia 8500 |

Depends on the manufacturer. I know the Apple 30 inch Cinema displays require a dual link DVI card, but that may not be true for a 26. You should check the manufacturers specs to see if it requires it. If it does, it'll probably be best to go with a dual link, dual output video card, like the nVidia 7300GT series instead of two separate cards. |

Correct. As long as the second port on your graphics card is supported by whatever monitor you plan to purchase you can't go wrong. Any monitor with a VGA (blue) port, whether it has a DVI port or not, will work as an additional monitor. The exception to this is some of the Radeon 9200 series graphics cards. Although they support multiple monitors they do not support desktop spanning, they only desktop mirroring (the exact same image on both monitors). You can plug it in to the second VGA port or use a VGA - DVI adaptor if the second port is DVI.
As Eric J said, a graphics card with Dual DVI ports would be optimal. It would give you a sharper image and allow for better resolutions. I haven't come across any monitors that require DUAL LINK capable cards (not to be confused with DUAL OUTPUT) but if you do come across a monitor that requires it then obviously you need to get a card with this feature. |
