New blacks only school? (pg. 2)

This 'afro-centric' school program is due to the low percentage of black students completeing high school.

Instead of creating a seperate school, which will surely increase racial violence and segregation, why not identify and address the key issues causing such a poor statistic. Alter the existing curriculum (which should have been changed 15 years ago) to include more afro-centric education, history, etc. Identify the root causes of the dropout rate and take steps to correct it instead of pandering to one group. Just another example of the Ontario and Toronto governments being reactive instead of proactive.

This idea gets a big

whoa whoa whoa, take it easy, we already gave 'em february as black history month, theres no need to go crazy and give 'em the whole year to teach that stuff.

Just to make sure everyone is clear on this... this is something that the "black" community in Toronto has been lobbying in favour of for years now. The belief is that if black students are taught things from a "black perspective" (whatever that is) that they will do better and not drop out... what they're really saying is that they think black kids fail and drop out because they can't learn the white man way (systemic racism).

So because the black children/teens are too stubborn to listen to white people, they get their own school? you know what, im surprised this hasn't gone through yet, considering white folk would not only not disagree, but probably support this change to their fullest.

figures...... they cant seem to stay in school so that's somehow "the man's" fault. I have alot of black friends from toronto who had good grades in school and went on to be very productive memebers of society.... maybe the problem is that this 40% are just in retarded..... i think its more to blame on parents not taking interest in their child's education. kick their asses back into classes and motivate them to succeed....

I say we just let people organize themselves into schools however they please. If we did that, the schools would probably resegregate on their own, since racial groups mostly tend to self-segregate in their living arrangements anyway -- at least here in the U.S. But nobody would be forcing anybody to go anywhere. Freedom of association: what a concept.

It got approved by the Toronto District School Board last night (very close vote, 11:9). They intend to have 3 "Afrocentric" Schools opening in September 2009.
