My PC:
Dell Dimension 5150/E510: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB)
Ok, the computer I got from Dell has only 1 GB memory but I wanted to add memory to it to make it faster. I ordered this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820146526
Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
My computer currently has 2-512 MB DDR2 NON-ECC SDRAM 533MHz (2 DIMMs) installed in it.
My question is should I remove the existing memory it came with and install the 2 new 1GB memory sticks I bought or can i have all 4 slots filled with the existing and new memory combined ?? Does it matter ? Someone told me it might not run properly so its best to remove the old ones and just install the new ones but others say I can run all of em at the same time with no problems, as long as I have paired(even number of cards) installed. I have no clue about hardware issues so I figure maybe someone on here knows something about this. Any ideas ? |

| I believe only two of the slots are for RAM, cuz when I upgraded to 2 gigs the guy told me the other two slots were for sumthing else. |

| you can use all 4. But, the difference in performance with all 4 vs just the 2 won't be noticeable. So in the end...you can't go wrong in either instance. If I were you? I'd just use the 2. |

I build custom computers and do it mostly from using parts bought on Newegg and can tell you that if the new sticks were the same as the old (which they aren't) I'd say to use all four sticks (all three gigs) but since they're different your computer will actually run better with just the new and somewhat faster (probably matched) RAM sticks.
Two gigs is fine, anyway. You should definitely see a noticeable improvement in your computing with them. Good luck :) |

Thats what I was thinking as well. Im prob just better off using the two new ones since they are compatible and will work well. I can always keep the old ones as backup if these dont work well. Thanks for the help. But yea, I doubt these memory sticks will be the same. Hopefully I will notice a good imporvement once they are installed. :D |

| Holy f***. Damn, I feel like my computer can fly. I dont even put my mouse clicker on the X to close out a window and its done. LOL. I def. recommend a RAM upgrade for those of you who notice ure PC slowing down. |

Not in all cases. Ram means nothing if your processor speed is low.
3.0 GHz is nice tho ;) You shouldn't be having any problems. Typically I don't like Dells but the Power Supply on my AMD burned out so I am stuck using a Dell right now but I'm getting a laptop soon. |

in my experience, It's best not to mix types of Ram. It May cause instability.
/edit i guess im late and problem is solved. |

From what I have been told, a 2.5Mhz PC with 2GB RAM will prob run faster than a 3.0 MHz PC with 1GB RAM. Thats why I figured for a few extra bucks, I can just add more RAM and it def. makes a hell of a difference. Of course the speed of the PC helps as well, but I think ppl underestimate what RAM actually does for a PC. |

Nah, i got no viruses. I have all the scan programs and stuff. The slowing wasnt that much noticeable except with more than one window open. Its fine now though. |

hahaha, nice!
I'm glad it worked out so well :)
BTW - an easy trick to keeping it running fast is to clean out your system cache's/temp files every once in a while.
You might be surprised to see how much faster everything works after running Crap Cleaner if you haven't before.
