Edwards and Giuliani Dropped Out

Not sure if anyone noticed.
Edwards is in the unique position to play kingmaker - initial polls are suggesting that HRC is the more popular second choice among Edwards supporters, but an endorsement of Obama could go a long way in negating that.
The circumstances surrounding Edwards' departure from the race are unusual, as he pledged just recently to stay in the race to influence the conversation all the way through the Convention. I've heard speculation that after the last debate Hillary may have offered him the prospect of being Attorney General in a Clinton Administration... in that case, an Edwards endorsement of HRC would more or less seal the nomination for her.
On the GOP side, the implosion of Rudy is complete, leaving McCain as the clear favorite. He still has a lot of funding issues, so Feb. 5 remains a contest between him and Romney, but at this point it will be very hard for Huckabee to regain traction. His propensity for gaffes has made "God's candidate" a lot less exciting for the Christian Coalition folks. Romney's best shot is an endorsement from Huckabee... otherwise McCain may coast to August (which he absolutely needs to do to have any money left for the general election).
In any case, last night/this morning was a big development in the '08 race.
Personally, I'm sad to see Edwards go. He really impressed me at the last debate, and he is a big reason why the remaining candidates have put so much importance on issues of poverty, education, and healthcare. Hopefully the next debate won't completely fall apart in his absence.
Thoughts? Predictions? |

Yeah, and Hillary had this to say this morning:
| quote: | John Edwards ended his campaign today in the same way he started it - by standing with the people who are too often left behind and nearly always left out of our national debate.
John ran with compassion and conviction and lifted this campaign with his deep concern for the daily lives of the American people. That is what this election is about - it's about our people. And John is one of the greatest champions the American people could ask for.
I wish John and Elizabeth all the best. They have my great personal respect and gratitude. And I know they will continue to fight passionately for the country and the people they love so deeply. |
They had a big graphic up earlier, but it looks as if her site has taken it down now. One thing to be said though - Edwards really has changed the shape of the conversation in the Democratic primary, and it's very interesting to see both candidates acknowledge it. |

I liked Edwards a lot more in 2004.
If he backs Hillary, I'll be quite disappointed. |

lol edwards was a phony candidate. but hey atleast he is going to get nominated for the VP whoever wins between Hillary & Obama.
Giulianis fall was a tragic one. a man going into the race with so much momentum, decided to opt a strategy that has not worked in the past, and a very risky one. im from florida and he indeed invest a lot down here. but it seemed when Mccain and Romney entered florida that all faded away. but it wouldnt surprise me to see Giuliani as a VP candidate, if Mccain wins the nomination im almost 100% certain he will get it. |

Guiliani endorses John McCain?
WELP, looks like I won't be voting for John McCain...:o
So if McCain win the GOP, I will not be voting for the GOP.
I like Obama, but I'll take Hillary any day to more wars of agression and government deficits. I don't give a rat's ass if there are any tax cuts. If the government spending isn't curtailed, then what the hell are tax cuts going to do? Not a ing thing!!:whip: |

I think Edwards was about as real a candidate as we saw this election cycle. Only Paul or Biden can really make a similar claim that they never compromised core values for votes.
And I would be shocked to see him get a VP nomination from either HRC or Obama - he doesn't add anything to either ticket (ie Obama is already the young candidate of change, and he was the most out-spoken critic of HRC every step of the way). Perhaps Attorney General, or even a potential nomination for the Supreme Court, but I really doubt VP.

Giuliani's campaign imploded because he is a personal liability.
As RJ Eskow points out:
| quote: | | Consider the scenario: At first he thinks he can win, but then the race starts backfiring on him. His national security blunders after the first WTC attack begin to get major exposure. Then the personal scandals start coming out. Murdoch and Ailes probably told him all of these stories could be managed, but they're spiraling out of control anyway. And it won't stop as long as he's a candidate. |

The more people got to know Giuliani, the more they hated him. It's that simple. |
