Sasha/Three - Tampa 2/10 (pg. 8)

seriously, tampa is dead? have any of you been to the snatch nights at HPC??? un-ing-real. better than any superclub or major-city venue, hands down. a vibe so thick you can see it and some of the best music on a weekly basis.

ive talked to three about this recently. he lives in nyc and plays places like cielo and love there as well as everywhere else in the us (although he doesnt --- and probably wouldnt ----- play clubs in miami like space unless its during wmc which he has done before. he is only likely to play a party like aquabooty in miami if its not during wmc). he says the snatch nights at hyde park are far and away the best small to mid-size nights he does in the us. also says the crowd is more educated and enthusiastic usually compared to nyc, la, denver etc etc, as far as parties with djs like himself, lazarus, dice, wink etc are concerned.

even garnier called tampa the best of his tour (along with his superclub gig at avalon in la). so, while tampa doesnt have a strong club scene of more commercial djs like sander or roger sanchez or steve lawler the underground music scene is cracking there and has been for ages. snatch is going on 6 years old in june!!!!!!!!

funkyrobot,

Who are you? Do you work for HPC?
funkyrobot
nah i dont work for hpc. lol.

im just an old friend of three's . i like to hear good music, which is getting harder and harder to do these days. this is why i speak so highly of hpc. unfortunately i live in orlando and driving nearly 2 hours just to have a good night out gets old, but worth it to hear the likes of the people they bring in. i have yet to have a bad night there, but your results may vary.

see when i go out, i look for a few key things. [1] top dj's / great music. nothing less. (why settle for the norm??) [2] an educated crowd (makes all the difference in the world). [3] friendly bartenders and strong drinks. [4] affordable cover charges.

hpc seems to have found the right balance of all of the above, in my humble opinion. like i said, your results may vary, but i stick with what i know.

How often does Three play Snatch? Every week? I've been out for the bigger names but never just for Three, I'll have to check him out solo.

everytime I've been there its been top notch. Last year I had a friend telling me she used to go there, it wasn't very good, don't expect much, too much hip hop, etc etc... and we went and I was like, uh, what? this place is awesome! been back a few times since then and its been great. Don't really care for the treatment at the door (get over yourselves) but I understand it. But once inside the vibe was always great. There is a hip hop room, an outside patio (covered and uncovered) and then the main room.

i emailed the man about it...... this is from three himself:

----------------------------------------------

Snatch happens the 2nd and 4th saturday of the month ---- every
month. i live in NYC so i usually play ONE of those dates either on
my own or with another out of town guest. due to other touring
commitments i usually miss 3 months of the year at Snatch (i missed
january already this year while playing in australia).

Snatch always has my resident dj Matty every time, as well as local
djs of my choosing on nights without myself or other out of town guests.

i tend to only book friends or acquaintances as my guests. if you
dont like underground techno, tech house or more electronic based
house ..... give it a shot once or twice anyway. our guests range
from King Britt playing techno to west coast acid house legends like
Doc Martin to djs like Loco Dice, Radio Slave, myself and then
some. dont come expecting to here 'party all the time' by Deep
Dish etc etc or the latest club "hits", as by and large its prob not
happening on the Snatch nights and i dont want to disappoint
anyone. we try to make what would be obvious in most places merely
(or just maybe) the occasional surprise here.... and (hopefully) the
rest of what we do just works its magic on its own.

Hyde Park has a relaxed dress code for Snatch nights, but that said
it is saturday night so shorts and a tshirt wont fly and its best to
arrive with girls etc etc to safely avoid any hold ups, but
whatever..... say you are there for the djs playing that night and
for Snatch when you get to the door. arriving with a flyer or
computer print out of the flyer will also help get you in quicker.
its the proper heads we want in the building first. you just have to
roll with HPC a little bit to avoid any issues. i cant control
everything, but i try to!!!

hopefully you like it. if you dont ..... so be it =)

lastly, the Star Spangled parties are just another thing i do and
this happens to be the 2nd one in tampa. they will always be
unconventional in terms of ticket sales, day of week or the line-ups
and how they work (for example if you are expecting "sasha at space"
this sunday..... you may be missing the point).

see you in tampa...

keep the faith...

chris is a good guy, holding the torch for the non mainstream music. he plays good minimal and mixes it *very* smoothly. he sounds like a cross between ricardo villalobos and booka shade, because he plays tracks by them a lot in the same set.

snatch is the only good thing we have in tampa. when three is not at snatch, its not snatch imo. seems like he's here once a month. its always packed when he's here, except for the time right before this past christmas, which sadly was a mostly empty floor all night, but that was an anomoly.

the problem is tampa doesnt have any good djs. they all play cheesy electro/commercial house. empty dancefloors everywhere, meanwhile the hip hop rooms are raging. then a big name comes into town and everyone comes out of the woodwork for those shows. this is what i mean by the scene dying. the floor used to be a smelly sweaty place, those days are gone. its been replaced with castro hats and chardonay. dont mind me im just an old jaded vet. im stressed thinking about it, i need a small asian woman to walk on my back.

I know I'm coming late in this thread, but I just wanted to agree here. HPC has always done me right. The atmosphere is awesome, the outside patio is great to take a breather, the music is usually good, and most of the bartenders are worth a good tip. I recently went to see Dirty South there and the vibe was amazing! I am really excited about this show as well. Oh yea!

Techno /tech House / stripped down prog /minimal tech and more in between.

you're right, and so can Monk, they are both excellent. but they never play. i was talking about the residents around here. im talking about go out on any given fri/sat night and you're bound to hear crap. its only when a big name comes into town, or when monk or santana decide to get off the couch (or whatever the fuk they do all this time, i think they just sit back and watch everyone else suck while smoking a cigarette)
