Some 1980's Commodore 64 games had trance like soundtracks.
Martin Galway invented Trance in the 1980's and trance was born on the Commodore 64's SID chip. I have audio tr00f.
1986 a game called PARALLAX http://www.mobygames.com/game/parallax
Here's the original Commodore 64 SID (sound interface device) output.
It's mono obviously because it was an 8 bit machine.

This was composed in 1986 4:38 is a nice transition.
Any old school C64'ers remember this one? |

I grew up on the C64, so have a big archive of its games. Thesedays the original is in the attic and I use the VICE emulator. Some of the games are damn fun.
Best two game soundtracks on the C64 were by Rob Hubbard (no thats not L Ron Hubbard, Chanology fans). He did a ton of stuff, but his best were for Warhawk and Hunter Patrol. Warhawk was a great game, Hunter Patrol wasnt great but the music was.
I guess it can be called an early form of electro, I hate modern electro but like a lot of the old C64 stuff. Its interesting to notice that the C64 SID chip, back in the early 1980s, can produce far better sounds than a lot of the modern producers.

I ripped those soundtracks from VICE, but they're fairly good.
If I ever get into production (some day), Ima get me one of these :D

Parallax was one of my favourite games - however - there were other signs of electronica within the C64 'scene' as well. I was first exposed to it from 'demos' from ppl I wrote to in Norway/Finland/Sweden/etc. -- we traded software on 5 1/4" floppies back and forth in padded envelopes in the mid 80s. I miss the excitement of seeing that oversized package in the mailbox and what treasures it would bring.. lol. I doubt Trance was 'invented' on the C64 but I know for a fact it HEAVILY influenced me when I was around 7 and it came through again later ;) haha.. I doubt anyone reading this would even be around in those times but maybe Swamp Thing/TGI rings a bell - lol.
For the nostalgic - check www.gb64.com and they mention (covertly) of some torrents/eMule links to get GameBase64 - many gigs worth, fits all on a DVD, and you have about 20,000+ C64 games.. SIDS.. accompanying DOC files/instructions/solutions/etc and includes almost every emulator -- no need to bother unpackaging/browsing dirs manually to find games. I downloaded this over a year ago and it is worth the effort if you're a fan of C64 era gaming.
As an aside, there was a tune a few years ago that took one of the SIDs from 'Master of Magic' and had the sample in a track.. I posted a thread about this years ago, I'll dig it up if I have a chance. |

I was getting ready to post in this thread solely for the purpose of mentioning Master of Magic. I would LOVE to hear this, since I was thinking of doing this very thing in one of my own productions. :) |

OK back! Interesting links everyone!
Yeah Master of Magic, can't forget that one, just listened to it. http://homepages.tesco.net/~parsonsp/html/master_of_magic.html
The SID is available man.
If you are feeling nostalgic:
Download this C64 SID player plugin for Winamp.
http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/144643
It installs into Winamps default plugin directory. You can configure it through winamps 'input plug-ins' preferences.
Then hop on over to http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=htt...on64.com/games/
Search a game title to bring it up, then click its relevant music download button and grab its .sid file.
Drag the .sid onto winamp. Or right click the file and change its 'opens with' attributes to the winamp application.
When it plays winamp will display the sid tracks such as 1/7 if available. Click the slider bar forward to jump tracks. It doesn't slide within tracks however.
Happy listening.
