Oakville, Ont. - Halton Regional Police have arrested a man after they received a report of a man with a gun at Sheridan College's Oakville campus, which remains under lockdown.

The Trafalagar campus is located on Trafalgar Road, north of the QEW.

Police said they were called to the campus after receiving a report of a man with a long gun.

One man is in custody, but no further details were available. Police said there doesn't appear to be anyone injured.

Staff and students also heard an automated message cautioning them that the school was in lockdown over the campus's loudspeakers.

Classes have been suspended and students were being told to stay off the campus.

This the message on Sheridan College's homepage:

"Please be advised that Sheridan's TRAFALGAR campus is currently in an emergency lockdown situation. Emergency services personnel have been contacted. The situation is under investigation. Normal operations are suspended, do not proceed to the campus. Please check this site for further updates. Thank you for your patience."

Tripod sparked Sheridan panic
Campus in Oakville swarmed by heavily armed police

A tripod likely was mistaken for a “long gun,” police said today after ending a lockdown of Sheridan College's Oakville campus and adjoining student residence.
Dr. Robert Turner, president of Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, said officials took the information “extremely serious” and had no choice but to operate as if there was a real threat when a professor thought he saw a young man with a weapon walking through the hallway.

After school officials watched surveillance video of this person, it still appeared that he could have had a weapon, Turner said. At least eight other student witnesses, who described what they saw as a “long, tubular object,” came to the same conclusion and alerted campus security. They reported seeing the person walking through the hallway near the library, at the back of the campus around 2:20 p.m.

The person was wearing a camouflage jacket, which raised concerns of the people who thought he might be carrying a weapon, said police inspector Jackie Gordon.

"When you look at the video, there is a possibility that he was actually carrying a tripod, but you have to err on the side of caution," she said.

“In the end, this was a false alarm.”

The lockdown, which initially involved the school campus, was extended to the nearby 350-student residence after receiving information that the alleged suspect may have entered the dormitory.

Several ambulances and paramedics were on standby, although there were no reports of any shots being fired, or anyone being injured.

Police led an exhaustive, two-hour search of the school until about 4:30 p.m., when students were allowed to leave.

During the search, they arrested a person matching a description of a suspect, but released him when they determined he was not the person they had been searching for.

Following the professor’s report, campus security contacted police and school officials who sent the Oakville campus, located at 1430 Trafalgar Rd. just north of the Queen Elizabeth Way, into lockdown.

Although some students were released initially, police continued to keep many others inside their classrooms as the search continued from floor-to-floor and a K-9 unit was sent to the site.

An announcement on the public address system told the students it was "not a drill."

Police didn’t receive any threat before Sheridan security called them.

"There was no threat phoned in, nothing to lead up to the incident," Carr said.

Rob Till, director of student affairs, was locked down in his office at 3 p.m. after an announcement on the college’s public address system at around 2.20 p.m. ordered staff and students to go into their offices and classrooms and stay put.

"They didn’t say what was happening but they said: ’This is a real lockdown; please stay in your offices while the investigation continues; this is not a test,’ and they repeated it about 20 times," said Till, adding the cause of the lockdown was not explained.

On any given day the college could have 7,000 to 9,000 students on campus, he said, and between 1,200 and 1,300 staff members.

He said the college recently installed a public address system "for just this purpose" and recently held a lockdown drill.

The college is often known for its animation program, with more than 3,300 full-time students learning the high-tech art in a program that has produced some of the top animators in Hollywood.

Sheridan grads have worked on such movies as Shrek, Shark Tale, and Madagascar and have won or been nominated for Emmys and Oscars.

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has hired a number of Sheridan grads over the years and has visited the campus.

Still, the highest concentration of students is in Sheridan’s business school.

I went to this campus for two years and would of never thought something this would happen. As i came back from the doctors it took like half an hour when normally it would take 5 min. Crazy crazy drugged up college kids thinking it was a gun.ahhahahah...oakville has maybe 1 or 2 gun incidents a year...

I'm kinda glad they were able to lock down the classroom's and have swat there ...just to think if this was actually real... also note that the local hasty market down the st. was robbed by two black gunmen carry automatic weapons....
