Bank Card Fraud Downtown...Check your transactions people!

So I got a call from my bank today (TD) and apparently someone had made a copy of my bank card, got my pin number? (I have no idea how) and took out $100 (my daily withdraw limit) from my bank account yesterday afternoon.
But I wasn't the only one!!! There were many people's cards copied. Someone else called in bank card fraud and their illegal transaction happened 1 min after mine. Luckily TD suspend the withdraw status of all the cards they believed to have been involved and apparently I'm getting my money back in 5-7 business days.
Anyhow, I don't know how many cards were involved and what other banks are doing about this so check your transactions from yesterday afternoon just in case (especially if you live/work in the downtown core like I do)!!!!!! Apparently the police have already shut down the operation but from what I can understand it can happen almost anywhere as the ATM or shop owners can be victims too if their system is hacked and they are not the ones involved (which is what I was told happened this time).
Seeing as this is an increasing problem I think most people should consider restricting their daily cash withdraw limit because being careful with your pin number (yes this includes hiding your hand as you type it in)is no longer good enough (although I'm sure most of you know this anyhow). |

Actually, I would worry more about stores now than ATMs. Most people know about ATM fraud (as I did) but I didn't know that stores are now getting their systems hacked. |

This has happened to us twice now in the last 6 months. Both at the same ScotiaBank location at Yonge and Bernard. I would have thought they'd up their security after the first time but apparently I was wrong :whip: |

That happened to me to, a couple years ago with Scotiabank... but they withdrew a much larger sum from my interest-growing account :whip:
I came to the Scotia bank machine one day and it told me (for no apparent reason) that "This account was closed... please contact your respective branch" or something along those lines. I was like "whaaat???" but then pretty soon figured out what was the case.
Luckily the bank gave it back to me :) |

You people have no idea!
This is actually what my entire job is involved with so if you guys have any questions just ask and I van answer if possible.
The most important thing to remember is to protect your PIN. If you are entering your PIN cover it so no one or no camera can see what your PIN is. If they can't figure out your PIN then they can't access your account! |

True *nodding*
I was told this after my bank account had been broken into, and several hundred $$ were stolen. (They even told me the time it happened and which Scotia bank-machine it was taken from, when I made the initial complaint call). Before that, I didn't really bother to cover up my PIN, but now I do it automatically all the time.
I've also heard that they can put some kind of a device into their computer which will copy and store the PIN from when you enter it, so if you see them swipe your card twice (through two different machines), do not proceed with the transaction. This happened to me also, but it was a few months before my account was broken into, so I don't know whether the two incidents are related or not. |

^^^ This got me thinking about a transaction I just had a few days ago. I feel dumb bc I don't remember what store it was, but know it was a big one at lease. It wasn't my debit, but my AMEX. The girl swiped it against the card reader built into the keyboard POS system, it didn't scan she said, so she scaned it into the Interac card reader where it was accepted. I signed the credit card as usual and I was on my way.
Jeff, is this normal, or fishy? BTW, do you work in or near FCP? |
