A RIGHT to Life protest in Brisbane almost turned nasty today when a group of pro-choice demonstrators ambushed the event and stole the limelight.
Police were called to diffuse the tense stand-off after about 50 pro-choice campaigners stormed the stage as the church-backed Respect for Women rally was about to begin in Queen's Park at 2pm (AEST) today.

The rally was organised to protest against a private members bill proposed, but not yet lodged, by Labor MP Bonny Barry calling for abortion to be decriminalised in the state.

In Queensland it is currently an offence to conduct an abortion except when a doctor deems the mother's life to be at risk.

Noisily chanting slogans including "You don't care if women die, right to life remains a lie'', and "Not the church, not the state, women must decide their fate'', the pro-choicers only backed down after a group of up to 20 police asked them to step off the stage.

Retreating from the 300 strong crowd, pro-choice spokeswoman Lauren Mellor said they had decided to ambush the event to put voice to the majority of Australians who supported abortion rights.

"Surveys right across the country over the last decade show there's around 80 per cent of the people who are in support of the pro-choice position,'' Ms Mellor said.

"So we are definitely in the majority.

"I think it is really important we show that the majority of people are in support (of the bill) and that we don't let our voices be drowned out by the majority here (at the rally).''

But Right to Life president Teresa Martin said the pro-choice camp had shown them little respect by continuing to noisily interrupt the rally.

"We are happy to have them here, we just wish they had been a little more respectful and allowed us a chance to speak,'' Ms Martin said.

Ms Martin said irrespective of whether the bill went ahead, the Government needed to know there was a "huge groundswell of people who don't believe abortion helps women''.

"All it does is ... put one set of problems to the side and gives the woman a whole heap more, and often they are lifelong problems of grief and suffering when that may be the only child she can ever have,'' Ms Martin said.

The event concluded with the release of hundreds of lilac balloons bearing the words "Cherish Life''.

I don't know about the other states but it is still technically illegal in Victoria, same legal loophole. I believe this is being addressed this year. About the only thing John Brumby has got right.:(
