I want to buy one of these two synths or poss the JP8080 rack, but I am not sure which one to plump for. Just wondered what peoples experience with any of these is and what they would recommend. BTW I will be using it for Electro/House projects as well.
Cheers

| sh-201 has the usb thingie thats a BIG plus. the jp8000 will require an audio midi interface. somebody correct me but the sh-201 has the same osc as the jp8000 including the supersaw wave form. id go with the sh-201. |

The Sh 201 is the Jp8000 plus USB and control Software but without the display on the JP
You can get the Sh 201 new but the JP used only
Great and easy synth and if u are really good u can make so much out of it...I hope i will come to this Level one day
I was one of the really very first owners of the Sh 201 and I'm Happy
Just remember that the Sh 201 does not send audio over USB and its not the total integration like in the virus TI its only for sending Midi and connecting with the Control Software

| actually the sound quality of the sh-201 is lower than the jp-8080. it sounds more digital and has no chorus (one of the most important features of the jp) |

| I'd go for the JP! I've had it for years and I still love it. I haven't owned the SH-201, but I've tried it. :D |

$0.02: I've seen a TON of second-hand SH-201's lately. My guess is that people are getting bored with them. I love the idea of it, to be completely honest. Super simple to use and such, but so are plenty of other synths. I picked up a Korg MS2000 and, despite the low polyphony, I really like it.
I also just picked up a JP-8080, but the guy lied and it's got a couple of broken bits which are being shipped from Roland. They still stock the parts, and a volume pot and a slider pot were only about 4 bucks each. Not bad, really. From what I've heard out of the left channel, I really do like it as well. :toothless |

Can you explain then by which miracle I'm using the SH201 as my main audio card as well as I'm using its inputs with various outboard like preamps in mono or external sound devices??
Feature-wise, SH201>JP8000 as you have TWO identical oscs on the sh while the JP has supersaw only on OSC1. Quite useful when emulating Juno-like sounds. Now ok, no chorus. If you're like any other guy using software, who needs internal reverb chorus and delays after all?
It really depends on what you want to do with a synth.
If you're more of the people who try out their clothing before they buy, just give them a try at the local shop and decide for yourself, that's all you can do. |

he meant that the plugin doesn't transmit audio. you have to route it yourself. if you use the internal soundcard it's a lot more easy than if you use another soundcard. but soundwise the jp soounds better (less alias and less digital) beside that even the jp-80X0 sounds not that great for todays synth standards.. |

Exactly I mistyped maybe :D
One of my 1st major problems was that I thought the plug in deals as a soft synth using the audio transmitted between the hardware and Software plug -in  |

If you're expecting to get the "classic JP sound", go for the JP-8080, or the 8000. The SH-201 can probably come close, but it lacks the chorus which is a big part of the JP sound. I'm not sure the filter is even the same in the SH-201, which is also important.
The JP is a more professional synth, even though it has less oscillators. |
