Jon's Random Night in the Acid Lounge Review
Getting the chance to play 7h 20m (I'm keeping track for personal record purposes lol) in one of the most random of Guvy's rooms last night was definitely a crazy 'experience'. I’m really really doing my best NOT to review my own night in the room but rather to share some insight into the random events of my personal soiree. Overall a VERY positive one (and I look forward to doing it again) but here are some highlight/lowlights.
Firstly, the crowd… put simply, the Acid Lounge is by far one the weirdest rooms/spaces anyone could ever DJ in. George Williams is a hero, oh man. It's a very extreme blend of people wanting to fall asleep from exhaustion (lol) and people wanting it CZ style gunning. To make matters worse it's very much a 'transition room'. Depending on what is happening in the main room the Acid Lounge can empty out completely, and fill up RAMMED in like 5 mins. Hah So weird to see it happen, especially when it has nothing to do with what you're doing musically. People will walk out straight in the middle of a breakdown. Hah It's ed.
Secondly, the magical Guv CDJ with a mind of its own. Hah I was hesitant to post this as it actually sounds like a very lame excuse. But believe me people it's real (I'm praying that Val or Vince vouch for me in this post lol). In my (give or take) 8 years of mixing tunes I've never struggled as hard as I did last night. I thought I was beginning to lose my mind, when (with an hour left in the night) I remembered back to a conversation I had (ACTUALLY THIS WEEK) with other Guv residents regarding 1 particular CDJ in the Guv being cursed. The pitch on this fvcker had a mind of its own! Once I realized that was the problem I was laughing hysterically, you can actually hear the tempo sliding on it's own back/forth, up/down whatever VERY slightly. As you can imagine, this made the 7+ hours even more pleasurable for me. (that was sarcasm) In the end I think I managed to "quick mix" my way out of most, but WOW, that was annoying! I know there is a firmware upgrade downloadable for CD that Pioneer made for the 1000's (specifically addressing said Master Tempo issues), and I've been spending the last hour trying to find discussion on it as best to prove that I'm not losing my mind. I generally hate when people bitch about their sets and are negative about mistakes they've made, and I'm really not trying to do that in this point. I loved playing the set, and it went fine, I just wanted to share how random that was.
Other Random Notables:
- The picture frenzy that spanned most of the night. Haha What the hell was that!? I'm really not trying to sound like an arrogant DJ poster boy here. But amidst trying to pull of mixes with a broken CDJ I was also for some reason HOUNDED to not only BE in pictures (like posing with people hah) but to also TAKE pictures of people. hah Was weird and made for some great laughs. (I'm sure will make for even better pictures)
- The tunes. I played 80% of my CD book. (the other 20% isn't playable lol) At the 7 hour mark, I literally ran out of tunes. Hah .
- Midway through the night, out of nowhere an older Asian dude walks straight up to me, doesn't say a word, nods and gives me a crisp 50 dollar bill. WTF! Just as he goes to walk away I reach over and out of the DJ booth, grab his arm and I'm like "dude, take your money back, what do you want me to do with it". He grabs it, looks at it (as if he had no idea what it was), smiles and then kind of makes a "yeah you're right face" and leaves the room never to be seen again. In a nutshell that story describes my night pretty well. Hah
One of the best parts of the night was finally getting to meet SO many TAs that I had yet to meet... The ACTUAL trance fans. Too many to name, all good times. I was also SO glad to see my regular TOTA crew surprise me. (And also my best friend from Ottawa who parties once a year, shows up unexpectedly in a dress suit) hah |

EXHALE!!!!!!!!!!!! <3<3<3
Thanks sooo much to Ferry for playing my Exhale request, I think I was about to lose my goddamn mind at that point.
Still in Toronto, I will give a full review after lunch and a loooong drive home. <3<3 **(singin exhale in my head..........)**
btw tordan, the guy is someone ferry works with from NYC. He was a really friendly guy in the beginning of the night, but was OBVIOUSLY plastered out of his skull at the end. LOL @ RJ and his 2 hour anger spree on the guy. :haha: |

Sorry I missed it but got to Mcveighs for some drinks and ended up getting too hammered to go anywhere. Mcveighs was great as Ferry was there playing the fiddle before his set, Ricardo Villilobos was also there getting drunk and I'm almost positive I saw Tenaglia sitting in the corner soaking it all up. |

What can I say... what a ing great night! I met many ppl including Chinamon and Shaya... which these guys are always great to hang with. The night started off right when we got through the guestlist line and ended up receiving comp tickets. Nice not to have to pay getting into the club! I was digging Tall Paul's set as it progressed getting better and better. Ferry's set was awesome. My friend was whining how he hoped Ferry wouldn't play radio type trance. He definitely didn't. His selections were generally hard, which is what I prefer. Last time I seen him his selections were softer, but not this time. It was great when they lowered the DJ booth so we could see better. He looked like he was having a really good time behind those decks. I don't remember if it was him or Tall Paul who played Disco Demons, but when it was done, we went upstairs and guess what... they started to play it up there too! Everyone was freaking out and dancing hard when it was playing, and my buddy and I were watching these two shooter girls out dancing everyone else in excitement. Acid Lounge was pumping out some really good tunes and I had to stay a bit to dance it up good. The Gallery was also pumping them out. Between Deko-Ze and Sydney Blu, you didn't want to leave. We stayed 'till she was done and got sent off to the main room. Ferry was still playing at 6am, but I had enough and left at that time.
I hope my video recorded good, since I got a lot of closeups of Ferry during his set. |
