I have a 55g African Cichlid tank. Their bad ass for freshwater and really active. For a 30g, look into Lake Tanganyika as their a bit smaller, and very colorful like saltwater fish. You can make a reef setup with rocks all the way up to the surface of the tank, as that matches their natural habitat.

I have a 45g African Cichlid tank. Really nice fish to watch interact but you have to be careful when putting other fish in the tank with them. I put a catfish in the tank that is supposed to be ok with cichlids but it still died. I'm not exactly sure how, so I'm going to give it one more go and if it dies again I'm going to move to another catfish species.

I used to have a school of Piranhas

Isn't that a bit dangerous? Like having a mini-pool with a mini-shark?

No different then having a snake in your house. Just put the tank somewhere that a kid can't reach into and don't invite any of your dumb friends over. :p

Dangerous? No.

They are absolutely beautiful creatures. Killing machines, no doubt. But beautiful.

They have some of the nicest colour available to freshwater fish, moreso as they age and the red goes away. They're intelligent and will recognize people. They hunt in packs, like wolves.
I've fed them all kinds of fish, shrimp, krill, bloodworm, earthworms, mice and a variety of frozen foods.

There was a time when I was afraid to put my hand in the water, but you learn to read them and thier moods. I'll put my hand in a tank of piranhas, no problem...just not while they are eating. Rule. One.

I've only had them take a run at me a few times while cleaning the tank, and usually they just dart at you and veer off at the last second as a threat posture. They are very timid and cautious on the hunt unless starved. They will make mock attack runs again and again to make sure they aren't going to be injured. When feeding them mice, they either wait for the mouse to drown or make one strike and let it bleed out. In both cases, I euthanized the mice and re-introduced them into the tank.

This is my 3rd set. They started off as a shoal of 5, cannibalized one and two have died of old age...down to 2 now, each about 7 incehs long and as thick as a breakfast sausage. I plan to have these last two mounted when they finally go.

they often will jump out of their tank if they get too hungry

At first I was thinking of buying a really small and cheap silver arowana (South American), but now I'm considering buying a much more expensive fish. I'm looking into the Asian arowanas now, even though I'm a n00b to owning one.

Won some money playing poker so I'm probably going to buy an RTG (red tail golden) arowana (one of the Asian arowanas) for $400 this week. It's believed they bring good luck and prosperity to its owner, especially if you follow feng shui principles with your aquarium.

I've been researching about Asian arowanas and learned that you can't buy them legally in the U.S. Now I'm really glad to be living in Canada.

No, online stock.

Mine are much bigger. Also, that guy has a lot of red and his teeth are hidden by his gumline so I'm guessing he's juvenile. Mine have very subtle red around the lower gills, gold sheen to the body with gold flecks and very pronounced striping on the fins. They also have a little well-healed body damage from scrapping. I'll see if I can dig up a picture.
