just ordered my macbook pro :)
wondering which would be better
a midi controller with auto-mapping that has a built in audio interface (usb) (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XS49/
or a midi controller (axiom 49) and a audio interface that is firewire (focusrite saffire http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Saffire
if im only going to be using one input on the interface for a guitar every once in a while, does it matter if its firewire or usb 2.0?
also
is it a pain to assign stuff from cubase to a midi controller or would i be better off getting something like the x-station with auto-mapping?
thanks :) |

Firewire is faster than USB 2.0
I'm not too sure about audio interfaces integrated into midi keyboards but in my opinion its always good to get seperate things to do seperate jobs because items that can do multiple jobs seldom do any of them fantastically.
I would suggest to you an Echo Audiofire4. The keyboard, however, is up to you and what you would want in a keyboard for yourself. |

what about the whole assigning deal?
is auto-mapping really worth it |

This is a good question right here because I know I would rather manually map so that I know for a fact that everything is working in the exact fashion i want it to. But its up to you man. |

lol x-stations don't even have automap, only remote sls do.
remote sls don't have an audio interface in them either. x-stations do, however, have an inbuilt synth (hardware equivalent of v-station). midi controllers are one of those things... some people love them, some people don't. you are never going to have a controller that can give you an interface like an actual hardware synth. novation remote sls come close, but it really needs scribble strips on every control to be intuitive. personally, i just use the 8 knobs on my keyboard for the important controls, such as filter, release, etc. and do everything else with my mouse.
there is nothing wrong with usb for less I/O than 4. above that, i would go firewire.
i think you need to do alot more research tbh. also, this is all about your preferences, not ours. do you value portability? what are your plans for the future?
anyway, here's my thoughts...
need portability: get an x-station
don't need portability: get an audiofire 4 & an evolution 49 key keyboard
the audiofire will be a lot better quality than the x-station interface, but obviously you sacrifice portability entirely. on the downside, i would personally prefer having a hardware synth to play around with, so the x-station is a really good deal in that regard. i recommend the evolution as axioms seem to have quality control issues. |

my only synth/keyboard that has an audio interface built in is my virus and its got like 4 x the amount of latency that my ultralite does.
automap is great, i always have to make some personal twerks but it gets you up & running fast(which is freaking important, screw midi programming that s so tedious).
novation remote SL is a great board, highly recommend it... audio interface, well lets just say you'll prob buy one today and a new one in 4 mos if you go cheap. happens to us all |

this is actually going to be my first keyboard and first audio interface outside of my ty card that i have now. i dont really have plans on where i want to go with it, it wont behard for be to get booked for live gigs but im not really worried about that. i just want something to mess around with that isnt the ebst but def. not the worst. |
