Live Set Recording - integrating crowd reactions

Has anyone recorded a live set and included surrounding sounds (i.e., the party people going wild on a build-up, etc)? I'm interested in finding out exactly how one could set that up and what equipment is needed. Is it just as simple as connecting a mic to the mixer and setting the volume at a level that works? most likely not...
I'm sure there are important details and tips regarding the exact mic placement, mix volume, etc., to avoid having it all sound like crap when put together.
(I could just search and find info about this, but I'm more interested to hear from people here who have had experience with this, and also thought it would be a thread interesting to others as well) |

| Yeah, I'm thinking it would just be a mic set up. If you want to only record certain parts, keep the volume at 0 and them just turn it on when you want it. Never tried it but it would be a pretty cool idea, I kinda like the mixed CDs that I have that have the crowd noises. |

| yea especially from large live events that i'm not able to attend, being able to hear the crowd in the background puts a whole another perspective on things, i can sense the atmosphere of the place/event and that makes the whole listening experience better |
