What free software do you personally recommend for ripping cds?
-Must include the ability to automatically tag them if its a known compilation.
-Must be able to rip a mix without adding pauses at beginnings or ends of tracks. |

Exact Audio Copy. Uses "LAME" encoder, can use other encoders too. EAC is a bit old-fashioned in the user interface but does the job. It can test and re-read data from scratched CDs or flakey CD drives until the job is done right, most other programs can't do that.

EAC can get the track names from an online database and you can submit the names if nobody else has done it yet. It doesn't add any extra spaces if you're rippping from normal or mix CDs (CD must have the usual track identifiers of course).
I use VBR ("alt preset standard" setting in EAC) and have had no problems at all, but most people seem to be using CBR 320kbps or similar. BeatPort uses LAME CBR 320, not sure what program though. |

mp3's must always have a pause at the beginning and end, it's a format flaw, not a software error. |

anyway I recommend Exact Audio Copy too. It can encode a whole mix CD to a single MP3 and make the cue sheet for it as well which is very useful for foobar or other media players that support cue files. If you want the tracks done into multiple MP3s that can be done as well. EAC is free too :)

i can recommend EAC too, such a brilliant program!
you can adjust pretty much anything on it. it might be kinda overwhelming at first, but once you get it set up like you want, it's a very good program. i've ripped well over 1000 cds with it, probably even over 2000.
also if you want to rip mixed cds so that you don't have pauses between the tracks, i would just rip the cd as a whole mp3 and tell EAC to make a cue file for you and then use a player that understands cue files (winamp + mp3cue for example).
you can rip the cd as individual tracks so that you won't hear a skip between the tracks too if you're using a ripping program with the newest LAME encoder. also the decoder on your player has to support the feature. before it wasn't possible to rip mp3s so that there wouldn't be a pause between them, like Beat Blog said, but that isn't true anymore.
but if you rip the tracks as individual files and then later on burn a cd from them, you might get gaps between the track, depending on how gay your burning program is. but if you have the cd ripped as one mp3 and have the cue file for it, you won't have gaps between the tracks, no matter how gay your burning program is.
so it would be safest to rip mixed cds as a single mp3 + cue.
all of this applies to mp3. if you want to rip stuff to wav, then it's much simpler. ripping to flac should be kinda similar to ripping to mp3s. |

+1. I'm getting spoiled with iTunes auto-grabbing disc info from CDDB, and I can set recording to whatever I need (right now as 320KB CBR Mp3 files) |

Audiograbber + LAME encoder.
Since Audiograbber is just the interface, you must download the encoder (many choices here, but I recommend LAME) separately. You have a lot of options in Audiograbber, it's very tweakable.
However, Audiograbber doesn't get an upgrade since Fev/2004.

Anyway, too many positive opinions here about Exact Audio Copy, so I'll give it a try. ;) |
