8 bit, 12 bit, 16 bit, 20 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit: What does it all mean?

| I know that the CD is 16 bit PCM but, what about higher than 16? Like 24 bit? Can the sound quality of 24 bit+ be heard? I know that 12 bit was used in DAT's 32 khz Long Play mode so, that made sense so capacity can double. What about 8 bit? I heard that this was pretty low but, how low? Where can I get answers to these questions and more? |

For 8-bit you might want to download some old atari/amiga soundtracker/noisetracker tune and have a listen. Bad quality bud not awful in my opinion. |

| if your going higher then 16bit your probably going for dvd audio 24/96 . when you listen to 24/96.. wow. it's amazing. perfect quality. as long as the recording/ mastering was done right you can tell. |

8 bit's = 1 byte
dunno how this effects the quality of music, is it the amount of data/second?
and when we talk about 128 and 192k/bps for mp3's, how is this different from the 8bit 16bit thing? |

it means that an mp3 songs at 128bitrate means that the computer is reading 128 kilobytes per second when playing that 128 mp3.... |

NO IT'S NOT! MP3's at 128 kbps mean KiloBit-Per-Second! In PCM (WAVE) sound format, which is uncompressed, I heard that the "word length" is 8, 16, 24, or 32 bit. I don't know what "word length" means... Anyone care to explain??? |

what i am saying is true....do the math....
get a song then right click it and look at how many Kilobytes..not bits,,and then dive it by the kilobytes of the mp3...lets say 192 and it will give you the total seconds the songs is... |

| Even if modern studios go toward 32 bit, right now tht is useless to the public. Most people have standard cd players 16/44hz . few people have dvd audio / super audio cds which are 24 bit / 96 hz . the 32bit could be usefuly still in mastering then converting down to a 16 or 24 bit.. |
