I've known Ace quite a while...and not only professionally in the scene, but someone I'm also glad to call a friend.
So let me tell you how absolutely proud I was to hear he'd be nabbing some DJ gigs--as his knowledge, experience and love for EDM is among the most intelligent and passionate I know of. Put this on top of what an energetic, vibe-endusing monster he is, and you know--you KNOW you have a hit. Oh, and apparently he can mix too. ;)
So it was no surprise to me to hear that the Guv intelligencia had decided to give this young man and his cohorts a shot...and already they have multiple bookings in clubs all across Toronto and I wouldn't doubt that you may see their names on a CoZo flier sometime soon--it only makes sense.
They call themselves YM, comprised of Ace, Markett and Larse. You know these guys, because you've partied with them over the last few years. They gave you a manly handshake and hug whenever you chanced upon each other in the scene and they were there dancing beside you when that special ch00n was dropped. These are our friends, behind the decks, here to rock our worlds.

Look, I wasn't even supposed to 'effin go. I was at home, going to stay in and spend some family time, then Johnny Action NUKED his car (i mean, NUKED it), and screwed up my freakin' weekend. So instead of resting and seeing Ace and troops at Gallery on Saturday night (that's right, debut weekend--two bookings two nights in a row at two of the best house music clubs in Toronto--er, Gallery RIP), I had to go Friday. And I sure as heck wasn't going alone, so I told Leap to slap some energy on and get in the freakin' car before something else went wrong. (ok, i asked her very politely, and even flinched when she looked at me).
After we got into the car, everything went as smooth as silk. We arrived at Footwork at 11:15 with a massive lineup ALREADY. It's like Ace, Larse and Markett know everyone. Ok, they do. That's besides the point. We got inside relatively quickly, gave Erin (now footwork's general manager) a HUGE hug, and settled down into the beats with the biggest ever scene-family reunion I've had.
So many familiar faces, all happy and HYPED to see Ace behind the decks; Markett would be his partner and Larse would sit this one out. There's three of them, but two are up on a given gig--you never know who you're gonna get.
Oh, I asked Ace what YM stands for. "youth movement, your music, yellow marker
whatever.." Right on. I'll call them Yorkshire Mandibles.
I can't go over the music in any detail, because the night is a blur--I had so many social conversations with people I hadn't seen in some time...but there are two moments that stopped my world that night that still give me musical chills of pleasantness...
1. When Ace dropped Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 in the middle of his RAMPED session <3
2. When Markett dropped mad acapellas for Finally (tune id? "Finally! It's happened to me, right in front of my face and I just can't describe it...")
A final moment of awesomeness was when ace held his alter ego's mask aloft... El Ace O Cinelli... the crowd ROARED in approval... Ace disappeared, and in a moment, El Ace O was on the decks.
We danced our arses off. The place was packed. Footwork has been off the _hook_ lately, after a brief lull pre-new years. This is just one more of their freaking awesome bookings based on pure vibe and music. Good job guys--keep it coming!
What's next? Look for these guys hitting the decks in the Acid Lounge--for an EIGHT HOUR EXTENDED SESSION on March 15th!
Can't wait to hear more from these guys. The tunes, the vibe, the energy, the connection--Guvernment booking d00ds definitely got a winner here!
