I support him in his position. He has a contract and he can't be faulted for not wanting to agree to alter it. Just as we have no sympathy for athletes who want to bail mid-way through their contract for more money, why begrudge Mats by feeling that he should waive his no-trade clause? Plus, he took LESS money to stay here this year when he could have earned far more on the open market. It's unfair to hold him responsible for past management incompetence.

I respect his decision.....that being said, the entire no trade/no movement clauses should be outlawed......all they are for is to give more power to the players when they shouldn't have that kind of power....they don't want them because they love the city they play for...they just want them so they can dictate who they get traded to. |
I don't have a problem with them...I have problems with teams who grant them without thinking though. It's ludicrous that the Leafs have FIVE (IIRC) such contracts on the books. |

True.....personally, I wouldn't mind seeing no trade clauses if they were not allowed in the last year of a contract. The players have too much control now....which can cause the exact problem that the leafs are having.....can't improve because players have these no trade clauses.
Teams are almost forced into including no trade clauses now because players won't sign unless they have them. |

well excuse me for expecting the leafs star player to play like a star. you guys are too sympathetic and attached. appreciate sundin for what he is. not what he was or should have been. |

and what is Sundin according to you? I appreciate anyone's and everyone's POV, but to say he doesn't/hasn't played like a star. I would encourage you to look at his stats once again. He's currently sitting on a +9 rating plus currently leads the team in virtually all fields:
Goals Mats Sundin 26
Assists Mats Sundin 37
Points Mats Sundin 63
Plus/Minus Mats Sundin +9
He always comes up big for the Leafs whenever they need him most, and is probably the most consistent player the Leafs have had...since I can remember. What more do you want, expect from him or a captain?
I'd like to know what basis you're using to rate him as a player or as a captain...and please don't compare him to Gretzky, Lemieux, etc.. Sundin has never been, and will never be a top 10 player, but he has always been a STAR. |

ummmm...
He's 21st in scoring at roughly a point per game, +17, and on a mediocre team beset by injuries all year...all at age 37. That sounds reasonable to me.
why is the responsibility on Mats to himself over to help a team whose management wants him to leave?
I LOL at people expecting Sudin to "do the right thing" for the Leafs when management made this mess themselves and now expect him to leave in order to fix it.
Usually it's the other way around...players bailing on their team for more money. Mats has proven loyal and taken what is likely LESS money to stay here.
Maybe the team should have thought more about allowing FIVE players to have no-trade clauses and signing sketchy players to burdenson contracts. |

Isnt that REALLY the point here? The situation should have NOTHING to do with Mats not choosing to waive a part of his contract. |
