MIDI Adjustments/Correction in Ableton

This could be a complete newb question since this is one of my first attempts to import a midi file that was recorded using an application other than Ableton or Cubase.

A buddy of mine who's a fairly decent keyboardist wanted to learn how to use ableton, so I had him send me a midi recording of himself on a keyboard. (I'm not sure what app he used to do so.) I did a simple drag-and-drop onto a midi track in Ableton and assigned an instrument to it. However, when I play it back only some notes are being played. As far as I can tell, it has something to do with human error while playing live -- every note that was hit dead-on timing wise plays fine, but notes that were played just a tad off don't play back at all. For instance, if I zoom in close, I can see that most notes don't fall exactly on the nearest 16th or 32nd note. I'm first of all wondering if my speculation is correct and secondly if there is some automated way to fix this. It's a three-minute recording, so it would be a pain to adjust each note individually. I know Cubase has some auto-correction functionality when recording live, but I'm not sure what to do with a file that has already been recorded.

Thanks!!!

I've never used Cubase, but since it's a professional audio application, I'm certain it must have a quantization function (which is what you want). Just try looking through the manual for stuff about "quantization" or "snapping to grid."

There's probably a "quantize" button somewhere in the MIDI arrangement window.

It is possible there is some overlap with the notes. If you have the same note overlapping on the same key then cubase won't play the second note (the one that is being overlapped). Try shortening the first note.

check the polyphony of the instrument or patch. Minute note timing offsets shouldn't prevent notes from playing unless the polyphony is really low.

Could be a CPU limitation too. If it can't process enough sounds at once then it just will skip certain notes.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll try all of these suggestions when I get home tonight.

Thanks again.
