Ableton automation and changing it - a simpler way?

I've got several tracks laid out with automation, specifically volume fading in and out. My only issue is when I go to change the volume, say it needs to be louder overall, is the only way to do this to highlight all of the automation and drag it up? It's kind of a pain because a lot of the automation is precise to a bar or something - meaning I highlight it all, zoom way in on the precise automation, drag it up, and test it. If you use the actual volume, it won't stay when you hit stop. Dumb question maybe... but it's annoying.

I know what you mean...
For that reason you should use live's "utility"-plugin (that can control a channel's gain) for your creative-mixing and the trackfader for your technical mixing. means:
Put an instance of utility on your track and automate it as you described (precise up and down, fx-volume ramping)and only change the overal volume with the fader. For your actual track you can copy the volume automation envelope to the utility automation and delete it afterwards

use the utility plug for your automation and the fader for the master control. or vise versa :)

edit: got beat to it

Perfect - thanks!

Yea, the utility is great for this.

Yeah, this is what I do, except the 'utility' is static and the fader is dynamic. I do this so I can watch any changes in real time of all of my faders at once. I think both ways have their merits, to be honest. :)

I always wondered what the best way to deal with that problem would be. I usually just increased/decreased the volume on the synth itself if i wanted a change but im gonna look into using the utility.

This is some useful information for sure! Thanks :)

That was always a pain in my arse too!
