How do you make a midi track into audio track so i can add stuff like delay, compression, etc.
For a bit of info: I use cubase sx3 with NI komplete 4. I don't use any external controllers. I like using mouse better.
What i'm struggling with is when i open a vsti and draw a midi track with a few notes inserted into the lane, i can't seem to use delay and compression and what not in real time. The effects for midi seem to be different from audio tracks.
I just want to be able to experiment with the notes while using delay, compression, and whatnot in real time.
What's the best way to go about this? Thanks for any reply. I'm new to cubase btw, so if u reply with good info...please elaborate a bit so i don't get confused. thanks :) |

when you open your vst instrument and assign it to your midi track cubase will automatically open another track for your vsti in the mixer.
go into your mixer and look for the channel that belongs to the vst you want to add effects to. once you have found it click on the little E button. this will open your channel right up. in this you will find inserts. click on a blank box below inserts and select the effect you want.
if you have any trouble doing this let me know and i will try to elaborate a bit more for you |

| when i open the mixer and the e button, its still the same thing. i can't use the same effects that i can with audio tracks. it shows stuff like 'track control' 'apache..' etc.. What i'm lookin for is the compressors, delay plugins and stuff and being able to hear all the plugins added in real time. |

Are you confusing inserts with sends?
I'm inclined to say RTFM :tongue2 but colinjames' directions are pretty straight forward :) |

Write your midi loop (arp, bassline, fx, etc)...
Click the solo button for that channel.
Set locator to fit the loop (not too sure if that is the correct word, the locator thingies that you can move around for timestretching and audio mixdown...)
File, export audio mixdown, export as wav, name.
Right click add new audio track.
Find your newly created audio and import.
That should do the trick.
That's the only way I know how to do it, if you want to edit the midi, you will have to redo this I think every time.
Hit me up on aim if you have more questions.

| lol at kevy kev. Of course you can apply vst effects in real-time in Cubase. You are getting MIDI tracks and the instruments audio outputs mixed up. Read from page 289 in the Cubase manual (for SX3) or just press F1 when using Cubase and search for VST instruments. |

| lol, how the heck could you ever get anything done if you have to render your tracks to wav every time you want to change an effect? :eyes: |

I think i figured it out. Is it those extra vst channels in the mixer? Because if i click on the e button for the main fader, then i just get the midi effects. But if i click on the e button for those extra faders, it pops up the effects that im looking for.
For example, when i added the absynth 4* and created a few notes, on the mixer, i had to go to this thing called absynth 1* to get delay and other stuff. But on the original absynth 4* fader, it only brings stuff like track control, transformer, etc...
Now for battery 3, thres like 10 extra channels, how do you know which one to put the effects into?
Usually i have those channels as 'can hide' and don't bother with them, but now it seems like they are just as important especially if i want to add audio effects in real time.
Correct me if i'm wrong. |

I could never figure out how to add lets say...Camel Phat on my FM8 without rendering the FM8 down to audio. I have the SX Power book but recently moved and haven't found it.
I will take a look at the manual again.
Work harder not smarter I guess....
