Isn't it just by varying your breathing?

I had heard something along the lines of what I think you're getting at - I know that hiccups are diaphragm spasms, I just never knew what it was about altering your breathing that brought them under control.

Thats the one. I thought it was bull until i tried it. For some reason it calms your throat. Other good uses for it include panic attacks.

I have worked out this method of stopping the hiccups by myself. It works for me every single time.

When you get hiccups, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Slowly exhale while focusing your attention on the diaphragm. Do not force out more air. Just exhale as you normally do. Once the air is expelled, do not breath in immediately. Hold your breath between 5-15 secs (longer the better) and keep your attention focused on the diaphragm. Think that you are relaxing the diaphragm and that the spasms will stop as a result. During this time frame, you will get a feeling that the next hiccup is not going to arise. Once this feeling arises, your hiccups will stop. In spite of this, if you still get a hiccup then take a deep breath and repeat the process. The hiccups will stop on the very first try, if you can fully concentrate on the diaphragm while holding the breath. Usually this does not happen and the mind gets distracted by other thoughts. So you will need to repeat the process a few more times to make the hiccups stop.

My hiccup sessions usually only lasts for 4-5 hiccups. On the other hand they are REALLY loud.
