well... if it takes the light 8,000 years to travel to us then what we see now is 8,000 years ago, right? So if you kept focus on the star everyday and suddenly saw it explode... that was 8,000 years ago and you could start the countdown until it arrived, 8000 years later. If it was even headed this way...

anyone ever read "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan? = win.

One thing some of you folks just completely over-see is the fact that this type 1a super-novae could have already happened and it takes energy 8k yrs or more to reach earth.

So that time may be markedly shorter or markedly longer depending on when it 'did' happen.
