A gem from Ulrich Schnauss

Hey,
I bought yesterday a used CD of Ethereal 77 - Landscapes, which is one of the first album of Ulrich Schnauss. It has that Ulrich flavour, but with faster beats (moslty jungle). I think it's my fav album from the German guy. |

I have these three albums from him:
1. Far Away Trains Passing By
2. A Strangely Isolated Place
And 3. Goodbye
Third album was not that good... but first two albums are one of my fav album ever..
'..passing by' was the melody I heard in movie 'Elizabethtown' I traced it and found this gem. He is brilliant producer.
He creates beats and guitar effect using synths!! |

What the hell is 'shoegazing goodness'?
Its a matter of 'personal preferences'. Its not just me but a lot of other people out there didnt liked 'Goodbye' album in general as compared to his previous ones.. you can read reviews on amazon.com for it.. it was rushed into cashing in on his previous two immensly good albums.. clearly goodbye was not upto the mark the standard he set for himself... and his standards are pretty HIGH!! He is AMAZING!!
For all those who have not heard of him before.. I would SERIOUSLY reccomend you to try out his first two albums I mentioned.. you wont regret it.. he is so good yet so unknown.. I bet in ten years from now he will be as famous as Chicane is right now. Its art. Thats art.. you realise its value only when he is no more that active/engaging. |

Probably because, in some places, it's too extensive a departure from the sound and style of his previous two albums. The vocals were much more apparent and pronounced, and there was an additional 'experimental' presence (if you want to call it that) to some of the tracks that differed quite a bit from what we're used to hearing from him.
It kind of reminds me of the reception Holden's "At the Controls" received upon its release. He made a significant impact with Balance 005, having not released a mix comp since then, so I think everyone was expecting something that was more or less designed around the same lines of 005. When that wasn't the case, it didn't seem like people reflected positively upon it. I think we can draw a similar scenario with everything that was leading up to "Goodbye" (especially since FATPB was released in the US after SIP).
To be frank, it misses the mark a number of times on that album, but there are a few gems that go down as instant Gold-Level Schnauss!
By the way, I really wish hey picked a lighter font on the album, as it becomes way too challenging to read at times.

Listen to some Shoegazing material in order to find out. It's generally quite apparent that Schnauss draws heavily upon Shoegazer influences in his productions.

From what I recall reading before the release of the album, he ran into some production difficulties, but once resolved, he claimed to be very satisfied with the end result. I don't think it's an attempt to cash in on his increasing popularity, as he seemed pretty concerned with ensuring that Goodbye reflects quality ouput.
SIP is still my favorite Schnauss album, despite bordering on being overly-sentimental, with Goodbye being least enjoyable to me (but I wouldn't never go so far as to say it's just a non-substantive cash cow). |

The third album had AMAZING production, the synths and the quitar layers sound full and clear. The thing is that whilst he clearly worked hard on this "shoegazing" electronic sound, the ideas and the melodies are not that good IMO. The album scores high on presentation but low on content. The opposite seemed to happen with the previous two releases, in which whilst the production techniques were not that great (especially for the first album "far away trains passing by" which was based on a cliche pop-ambient structure) the themes behind the songs were more honest, deep and emotional. In the last album, ulrich looked like he just wanted to mimic My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive and made an album for the sake of it. I mean some of the tunes like "stars" sound incredibly generic, like evolving around a cliche shoegazing driving drum without a clear direction.
A GREAT neo-shoegaze electronic/rock album which was released in 2007 was this one though:
MAPS- "WE CAN CREATE"
Very layered, orchestral, dynamic and emotional.Here's a tune from the album (a more "poppy" one).

and ofcourse everything by HAMMOCK for (usually) instrumental goodness.
On topic, i have heard some Ethereal 77 stuff from his website, but i wasn't inpressed much though. The drum'n'bass structurte is not something that excites me. The album could be much better and i will definitely check it out. |

Actually I find it more "honest", it's more direct than his current stuff, which is maybe more "forward-thinking". |
