| So I might have to walk away from my current position working in technology and compliance, i commute to/from long island and its killing me. Any decent jobs that pay decently that I might want to check out until I find something better suited towards my career, just maybe for the meantime? I've been looking for months now.... |

| if you have a job now, stick with it. the market SUCKS and there is really nothing out there. |

especially in law and finance. although i am about to move jobs w/a nice little salary bump!
you want a job, ask a recruiter or a job board; a trance forum probably isn't the best place to start your search. the best thing you could do in preparation is spend alot of time perfecting your resume. |

It depends on what field of law and what division of banking you're in; in my opinion. For explaining sakes, I'm heavily involved with real estate and real estate financing (mortgage) law.. and with the crash of the mortgage market and the ongoing scrutiny of lending procedures.. the amount of mortgages coming out of banks have slowed down tremendously.
So far.. I've been through 2 law firms that have had to let me go for:
- dramatic drop in business (firm was heavily involved in sub-prime lending business)
- dramatic drop in business (firm believed a closing compliance officer 's duties could be consolidated with another staff member's duties)
I had another law firm that was contemplating laying off two it's staff after my probation period to cut costs.. alot of law firms heavily involved with the real estate market has been cutting costs lately.... but assuming you're going into a firm with foreclosure/bankruptcy/other law practices.. you wouldn't have to worry much.
And it's better to check on job boards/recruiters as the above has mentioned

| ok first the "what are you doing this weekend" threads and now this lol. i remember you posting about jobs a few months ago. ta is def not the place to be looking for a job unless you wanna wash dishes or be a server........if you're that hard up for a job you will find one......you just have to get out there and look! get a really solid resume together and upload it on monster.com and yahoo jobs. if you have something to offer im sure you will find something. check craigslist also and email / fax your resume to everybody. you would be suprised how many new positions open up each day. if you have your resume out there the better your chances are. and if you dont hear from them....call them yourself. they like it when people are persistant. |

are you in a big firm? a couple of my friends were "not" laid off from thatcher proffit and cadwalader. I would say i feel bad for them, but getting paid $50K to leave is a pretty good deal.
As for me, my specialties are international and corporate taxes, which is also being hit by the downturn. I had to slow my progress in my LLM program so I wouldn't enter the market now (biglaw market). I'm hoping to come out during the upswing when firms are understaffed (because hopefully they aren't giving 100% offers) and they need an LLM. I'm nervous. |

This is just asking if anyone has any ideas for an intermediary job. I don't see why this post is out of place here.
For the record, the "what are you doing this weekend" threads were just like a universal roll call / "whats up" thread; to see what different people are doing and going to. I am well aware of the upcoming events thread. If you don't care for my posts, feel free to either ignore them or point me to the user policy that I've abused.
The thread I posted several months ago was a different question. Even if it was the same question, I don't see why some of you are so offended. People post youtube videos about goatse or gov. spitzers hooker myspace page, but this post was uncalled for? If anything is "lol" its that.

Yeah, I work for a large financial firm, in technology... and we were hit REALLY bad by the subprime situation. I'm OK because I have several large-scale projects running that I am involved with, and our group cannot take a hit... for now. 1 year from now, it may be a different story.
Sounds like you've got a pretty good plan going on, hope things work out for you - It's only a matter of time, once the feds economic stimulants start to come into effect and cut the rates more, these firms will bounce back. They may not be where they were this time last year, but they will certainly be in a better position now. Thats the only solace I have right now!

Primerica? Hmm I thought it was someone else who suggested that, unless it was your alt... in any event, I would literally be in the same boat since I work for Citigroup. |

| If you're any sort of numbers geek, here's a note: I went to Robert Half, which is mainly finance placement. I actually had great luck with them. I def recommend getting someone else to do the work for you... |

I'm not offended by your posts at all and I don't think they are uncalled for.....I'm just simply giving you my 2 cents and trying to point you in a better direction. Sorry if my post came off that way! Good luck with your job search.....only you know what's best for yourself. |
