best way to incorporate a synth to dj set?

im not very good with routing audio equipment. still learning on this topic so bear with me

Looking to add a synth to my current set...djm700, tech 1200s, and torq. looking to possibly layer some sounds, use the appegiator during breakdowns, etc...

main thing i want is for it to be all in time.

im just curious about the routing options. obviously the djm700 only has a midi out. the synth i was looking at the novation xiosynth...also has a midi out.

other than an interface with two midi in's. any other way to get around it?

im guessing with the line out on the xiosynth...i can route that back to my djm to a free channel, so i can cue what im doing or whatnot but doing it this way, will i encounter sync issues?

thanks in advance :)

why?

I'm not very good when it comes to midi but as far as I know the DJM700 wont be sending the synth anything it can sync to. All you can really do is hook up the synth's line out to the mixer's line in and maybe the mixers midi out to the midi in on the synth to control some stuff (filters, effects, bpm, etc)

Just plug the RCAs from the synth into the "line in" on your mixer, and use a normal channel.

If the synth doesn't have RCA outputs, get some RCA adapters.

If it's a midi synth, I have no idea.

The 700 outputs MIDI clock sync code- controlled by the bpm counter on board, so will sync to your midi gear no problem.
You need a synth or whatever with a MIDI in, that can lock to midi clock and then you are good to go.

If your synth only has a midi out, you could always connect the MIDI out on the mixer to a MIDI in on a midi interface on your laptop, which in turn is connected to your synth via usb or whatever.
This is how you can sync logic or ableton or whatever plus your music hardware to your dj sets..

Running a synth through a dj mixer is going to leave a lot desired in terms of loudness.

I wish I could explain why, but I believe it has something to do with how dj mixers are designed to handle "finished" tracks.

Fair point actually, it's likely it could benefit from a bit of compression if you could incorporate that somehow before it enters the mixer, but try it first and see how it sounds... if it's getting lost then maybe look at getting a cheap compressor to bulk it out a little bit.

could you guys recommend any synths with a midi in?

the xiosynth is out since it only has a midi out

anybody have any experience with the korg synths (microkorg, r3) or even the alesis micron?

What you can do since you use torq is get a Midi keyboard and get a soft synth vst and use Torq's built in VST thing, that way you can set the global tempo in torq and the synth will go with it
