just got a new computer running vista and when i set up itunes for the first time it duplicated ALL my files!

i dont know how to fix this and i refuse to delete them one by one because i would have to manually delete 4000 files!

can't cause it shows the file, then duplicate, then the next file and so on so if i delete everything it will delete my whole library, not just the duplicates

You must have the option checked to have iTunes manage your library. What it will do is create files for artists and albums and sort everything. And unless the file was originally inside the music library directory, it makes a copy instead of simply moving it.

this is what im lookin at, all the files with the missing tag (!) are the files i want which are in my external hard drive, the other files which are there i don't know how they got there because they are not the way i set them up with equalizer and various things....

What you can do from here is delete the library without actually deleting any of the files and just start over.

Just make sure that your iTunes isn't set to manage your music library.
