I need to purchase an amp to hook my mixer up to my hi-fi speakers (don't have monitors yet). Because they aren't extremely powerful (120 watt each) how important is a high quality amp in this case? Can i just get a cheap one, or do I need to spend more to get a good brand/good rating etc?

it all depends, if its only for mixing at home then it comes down to what kind of quality you are after, the more expensive amps with brand names tend to be better but if your going to get monitors then I would say get a cheap amp now and save for a good set of monitors rather than blowing money on an amp that your only going to use for a short time.

on the same token though, if you get a bigger better amp you can use it later on with a bigger better set of speakers for parties and so forth.

In short, if its only a short term solution I wouldn't get a really expensive amp but if you are going to use it long term or for parties and things then spend the extra money.

Don't buy cheap stuff. Do it right the first time, and save up for a decent amp. Everything in the signal line will affect the sound. A cheap amp will make sound coming out of your hi-fi speakers sound bad.

If you are looking for something that has a lot of power and sounds good for PA systems, look at Crown amps. If you're looking for a hi-fi amp, check out the Bryston amps, http://www.bryston.ca/ampsel.html . Maybe even look into a tube amp...

So would you recommend buying a decent amp, and passive monitors later? How much would a "decent" amp generally cost?

you should atleast get one with a volumecontrol or you would probably need a preamp too, waste of money imo.

i'm using passive KRK monitors hooked up to a nice NAD amp....nothing i have heard sounds better imo. there certainly IS better than what i have, but not for the price range.

get a nice amp and you could most certainly get passive monitors later.

Firstly, what speakers are they - this will give an indication of the amp you will need. Secondly, are you looking to get a good quality amp to go with your speakers so later, you'll buy good passive monitors to match them. or is this just to have something for now, and you're going to buy proper active monitors later.

Personally, having owned both, I prefer active monitors as the internal amps are correctly matched to the speakers and have found quite different results based on amp and speaker combinations.

They are Sony RG330 Speakers. They aren't too bad actually (120 watt each). I'm not really sure what I want later. I will definately upgrade to monitors, but I'm not sure whether to get active or passive.

my suggestion:
plug your mixer into your stereo system thingy and then as soon as you have the money, buy some proper active monitors.

i see no point in getting a good amp to drive those speakers. and i would think such a system would have some kind of an input for some external source.

Well if you plan on buying more PA speakers or such, check out Crown amps. The XTi and XLS series amplifiers are good. Unfortunately, they will run you ~500 USD.

In response to palm's post, if you are spinning through this system you need not worry about buying another preamp. Your mixer is a preamp :D.

If you're looking for a hi-fi amp, check out Linn, Bryston, Arcam, NAD. These are all decent amps for decent prices.
