Help planning the 'party-time' of my trip...

So...
I'm travelling the world this summer, with my first stop being in South East Asia [Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China], and although I know where I wanna go, I am still unsure about what cities I'll be in on good clubbing the good clubbing days of the week. This poses a couple of problems, one being that I have no idea what clubs will be playing good house or techno while I'm there, and asking any traveller or local about musical taste will undoubtedly lead to sub-standard dancefloor outings.

So I'm asking my questions here, seeing as I know a lot of you have done some travel, and I hope the base of knowledge of TOTA for the world clubbing experience is completely global. So I'm hoping for club names, descriptions etc on the following cities :

Phenom Phen
Singapore [aside from the zouk, everyone knows that]
Kuala Lumpur
Jakarta
Bali [anywhere on]
Bangkok
Hanoi
Saigon
Shanghai
Beijing
Hong Kong

as well, any other cities I'm likely to be in given the the itenerary above...Thanks in advance.

haha, read about them. Overcrowded, more tourists than locals. Good in the early morning hours, but unless I'm going to see some temple or am on a day trip, I don't plan to see many mornings in Thailand.

After living in Singapore & Thailand for the last half year I would say that somewhere at the bottom of list of reasons to go to South East Asia would be to specifically hear tech sounds. That is not to say that it is not there or that I wouldnt go at all.

It will be an incredible experience; for me the most amazing experience of my life.

I can speak for a couple cities on the list

Singapore:

Yes there is Zouk, it is the closest to any of the cities listed to Guv. Big names, big sound, ZERO drugs, lady boys and bad dancers. The scene there was so so, but nowhere close to as good as 5 clubs in Toronto. Ministry of Sound has a club, and the music is hard, thumping trance very 2004 hardstyle, again dated atmosphere, but decent LOUD music. Cover is steep; generally in the 30 dollar range. There are other clubs there, most of which are in an area called Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Finally, to take advantage of teh climate go to Cafe Del Mar; it is on the island of Sentosa, very Hernan Cattaneo sounding melodic house. Watch out for everything being very expensive.

In general Singapore is very expensive, except for food...always go to hawkers centres to eat and drink, the standard of all food is of the highest I have every experienced.

Thailand: Your best bet would be to plan your trip around either the full of half moon party that happens are Koh Phangnan, it is a wonderful heaven on earth sort of place. My suggestion, which I wish someone told me was to actually stay on the island for a couple days leading up on to the party...there are many tours that will take you to and from on the night of the party however those options are disasterous....imagine trying to find your boat, need deep in water amongst 30-50 boats, when you are either drunk or high. There are clubs in Koh Samui that play some trance, but again house and techno were not prevalent. These are very rock and reggae type islands. Chilled atmosphere.

Phuket: there is a strip in Phuket, in the Kata and Karon beach area that play house and trance...but the funny thing is that they simply put on a cd and play out older MOS sets...the reason why I dont suggest making those places your primary stop is because the sex trade, hookers and lady boys are the primary focus of those places, and it will become overshwelming.

Indonesia: I had the awesome experience of going to the La Luna party in Bintan Indonesia, lasy year was the first party that they had there and I am not sure that they will do it again, however if they do - go...I saw Nic Warren live on a beach in the middle of the Singapore Straights...Bintan is an island that is actually only 45 minutes from Singapore but still considered Indonesia. You can stay at any one of several resorts there; very similar to what you would get in Cancun...very nice people, it was an awesome time there - the next day after the party I had brunch with Nic Warren which was cool...got to bust his balls about a couple trainwrecks from the night before.

Siem Reap/Bangkok - Cambodia and mainland Thailand where not the greatest places for clubs, basically I wouldnt feel 100% safe roaming the streets drunk and tired from a club late at night. Not that anything happened but theire was the potential.

Last thing, be very careful about any and all drugs, they are out there but in places like Singapore you will be convicted and jailed for life. If not killed. In Thailand the laws are less intense however justive is known to be brutal....carry cash, as they do take bribes ;)

have fun....lots of it...if you want to know anything else just ask!

if you can, try hitting the off-beaten path places like Burma (where it's safe), Philipines, and Brunei. though I don't know whether you'll find the 'world class' clubbing experience in those places like you would elsewhere.. Manila has a pretty good scene these days though I hear..

Honestly, I'd love to hit everywhere in Asia, the more I read, the more I want, but I only have so much money to go around, and even less time. Cambodia and Laos are as 'off the beaten track' as I'm planning, and really, I'm going to those spots more for jungle, mountain treks, and river/sea kayaking. I'd love to hit the philipines [I LOVE Filipino women, goddamn!], but really, I'm trying to fit too much in 2 months already.

yeah Laos and Cambodia are a good call. they are getting popular now among the backpacker crowd but still not as played out as places like Thailand and Vietnam have become. Though by our standards it's probably still cheap regardless.. save for maybe places like Singapore and Hong Kong as some have already mentioned..

actually, yes.

I'm meeting up with a girl I used to work with here in Vietnam and one of her friends. Aside from that I know thru friends of friends a dive instructor in Indonesia and a businessman in Shanghai, aside from that I'm on my own. I figure I'm reasonably personable, and I'm sure I'll meet other travellers on the way. Besides, I don't wanna get sick of someone in 4 months of travel. I've been thru a very rough couple of years, and this is my trip that kinda signifies the end of that before heading back to school this fall.

Yeah i've heard about singapore and hong kong. Really, singapore is gonna be a jumping off point for indonesia/malaysia, hong kong, a stop on my way north thru china. But they're big enough and reputable enough cities to stop for at least a little bit.

Cambodia and Laos were highly recommended to me from a number of people I know, so they had to be added. Essentially I'm going for the most experience I can get in the shortest amount of time, and although I would really love to travel all the way out to eastern indonesia, the philipines, taiwan, etc, there's just too much to do in too little time.
