And to back the above statement up.. I played some Ace of Base just two nights ago.
My sister's mates loved it! And they're all hot! So i loved them loving it...

I also just realised that on the 23rd of May i'll be seeing Paul Van Dyk and that'll be my 5th year anniversary on this forum! Damn!!!

Because you're spending too much time listening to a vocal minority vs. a silent majority.

I couldn't agree with you more.

When I played at Spundae, I used to always close my set with the Killers. TA's used to give me for it and call it "cheese." But you know what, I didn't care. I loved that song and so did the crowd. Every time I played it someone would come up to me and compliment me on it. And to see the room sing along with it was amazing. Aww I miss Spundae. :(

Anyhow, I play cheese every aturday night. But I also mix it with other stuff. And honestly, the crowd loves it. They come to me and compliment me every time. They're just there to have a good time and enjoy them selves. If I was doing a horrible job, we wouldn't be sold out every week. After all, that's my job, to make sure the crowd is having a good time, not me.

i agree with woody, i've played some really cheesy tracks out but the crowd loved it which in turn made me have a good time

i can't remember who the quote was from but it went along the lines of
"dance music began it's decline when the man playing it became bigger than the music itself."

don't know if that really applies here but that quote has stuck with me since i first read it

just go out and enjoy yourself, you know what you like, who cares what other people like, unless you're the dj, then it's your job to read the crowd

Oh come on Nem. You know you can distinguish between cheese and solid music. Absolutely no reason to call others bitter because they can do the same.

Yes, but what I mean is that one persons fromage is another's creme de la creme.

Take my wife for example. She thinks all trance is cheese plain and simple, but finds Combichrist fairly easy going.

For me, all RnB is commercial cheese but for someone into the scene, they could probably descibe and explain what makes a credible non-cheese record and would probably be able to educate me on those matters. That doesn't mean to say that I like it but might get a better appreciation.

Another thing that we need to establish is that often people may use the term cheese out of hand to describe something that they simply don't like.

What I am eluding to, and probably not very well is that there is always a group of people who will consider anything cheese just because a larger group of people like it.
Also what might get lost a little is that there are people out there who don't know the difference between a well written, well produced track and a track that has obscurity because of a lack of the above, but still may gain favour with a small group of people simply because it doesn't have any followers.

I agree though, there is definately dance music that is cheesy and yes I know the difference.

All I was trying to state is that we need to distinguish between what is Cheese and what is popular. And that is where the real heated debate may start.

Cheers

Damn Karl, I'm glad you didn't stop there, lol. Almost had to do a double-take for a second.

This one hits it right on the head. All opinions are subjective. Therefore, until there is a clear-cut formula to define said "cheese," then it will always be down to a matter of degrees.

Gah...

I went to an event where 90 percent(I wish I could exaggerate) of the people were either in high school or barely legal from the looks of it, and they were rolling. I'm just worried that these kids will get ed up in the end with bad pills.

Maybe we wouldn't see as much EDM, but people would be healthier.

Don't blame the substance, blame the behavior. The kids that seek out mind-altering substances will find one. If not pills, then booze, coke, rat poison, paint fumes, jenkem, whatev. More kids die yearly from alcohol poisoning than E related mishaps.

I don't want to try and point fingers, especially at people who might not want to take on the responsibility, but E acts like a double edged sword.

I wonder what the promoters think of it, because on one hand you have a ton of people coming to an event to roll; on the other hand, it's not in the best interest of public health.
