Irish Millionaire Fails To Back Own Horse Which Wins Huge Race
Wednesday March 26, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff

A man who's famous for his self confidence and believing in his own hunches is a bit red faced - and a bit poorer - this week, after he didn't trust his own instincts at a racetrack.

Michael O'Leary is a multi-millionaire who owns Ryanair, a low-cost Irish airline. So when he attended the Irish Grand National - a legendary horse race in his native country - on Monday, everyone expected he'd lay his money down on his own steed, an animal named "Hear the Echo."

But the man who got rich by taking chances didn't want to risk any money on the equine, after the odds makers said it didn't have a chance to win.

You can probably guess what happened next.

The nag no one expected to do anything wound up winning the race at odds of 33-1. The payoff: nearly Cdn.$400,000.

Luckily for Ryan, that amount is a drop in the bucket, but he's still chagrined to admit he didn't back his own horse. "I thought he was going out for a run to keep himself warm," the maverick businessman told The Irish Times.

He calls himself "gobsmacked" by the fact he didn't believe in his people - and his animal. "Two people asked me earlier should they back him and I told them no way," the Irish Daily Mirror quotes him as saying.

He had to content himself with collecting the trophy for the race from Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, a frequent lampoon target in Ryanair commercials.

Yeah that Ryanair bastard deserves everything he gets :D Anyone whos ever flown with Ryanair will know its a very unpleasent experience, cheap or not.

Hmm, I guess the closest I would know for the Irish for the internet meaning of 'fail' would be -

"Ni raibh sé abálta e a dheanamh"

Which translates as 'he wasnt able to do it'. Which is e.

Yeah, no sympathies from me either.

I'm glad I did my research when I was in Europe last year and opted for BMI over Ryanair. The Ryanair horror stories wer ridiculous :nervous:

There were plans for him to start up an associate airline company that would have transatlantic flights from North America to Europe. I'd love to see that happen for entertainment purposes :haha:

yeah. the companies record is terrible, but they employ tens of lawyers basically to put anyone off sueing them by holding cases up and talking bull back at them until the person decides it's not worth pursuing it.

The other horse is that Irelands national airline, Aer Lingus, basically follows everything that Ryanair do. They are getting to be just as bad. And Ryanair is trying to buy them.

Then, with Ireland as an island and the inevitable curse of having to cross water to get out of it, we'll have no choice but to fly on low cost airlines :whip:
