zoom H4

borrow this unit from school, there is a way to use the built in stereo mic (which is suprisingly good quality) and the 2 line ins at the same time and record all 4 tracks individually...

havent figured it out yet, but it's possible!

iKey Plus

I think Gemini makes it though...and that name makes me cringe.

I'm thinking of getting an ikey. They actually don't seem to be a bad piece of kit.

It's garbage... look at the reviews (granted this isn't the "plus" model):

Considering for $50 more than the iKey Plus you can get the Zoom H2, with a real screen and user interface, integrated mics, and it's much smaller, I don't see the point.

i need to figure that out too... but i think it has to be in WAV and the SDHC 4GB card (maximum supported card from what I read -- anyone tried 8GB or even 16GB?) are only going to allow you to record for a short amount of time :(

Just bought M-Audio Microtrack2 this week to record some sets at the WMC in miami. Its a neat little recorder, but it has many drawbacks. When i opened the box, the recorder was all wet with some kind of sticky smelly liquid, which i thought was the battery leaking. So i returned it to the store for another one (and tested the new one in store). The battery is built in and cannot be interchanged without prying open the recorder (it has no screws..)

The TRS jack inputs get clipped pretty easily with decent level coming from the DJ mixer. If the mixer is in the red, forget it.. It had no hardware input level control, just software one. I ended up using mackie mixer to keep the level low for the recorder to keep it from clipping.

The fast forward feature is slow. Could not navigate through 6 hour recording easily.

The USB transfer to computer is very slow also. I did not install any software though, just plugged it in.

Other than that, the sound quality is pretty good. No complaints.

Here is what i wish this recorder had:
1. Hardware -10 db level cut switch
2. Hardware limiter/clipper (EDIT: It has one, seems to work but still slight distortion at high levels.)
3. Level meter WITH numerical values attached

hope this helps

^^ Wasn't expecting such a negative review.. I have no problems recordsing off of my mixer with regards to clipping. I never use the USB to transfer, I always remove the memory card and use a card reader.

Works for me flawlessly. :p

nice find. Guess I'll shell out the extra 50. It's still not a bad piece of kit overall with a decent concept and easy to understand.

Hi J:\Digital, i did not think my quick first impression review was too negative, but if it was, oh well. The positive thing about the recorder is the sound quality. At 320k it is very good. But lack of easy access to the battery and no input level pad switch is a no good for me. On other thought, i can live with built in battery, and i think i can find the schematic online of a -10 db pad i can make.
