if it's not, they won't care.

Agreed. Put things down that you are good at that might pertain to the job at hand. Anything they wanna know about you personality-trait-wise is going to be inquired during the interview.

I agree that the resume is meant to hook them, but the personal part is to let them know you're not a robot and have some personality. it's a good way to connect with them. For example, i always put "avid baseball fan" on my resume. Not once have i been in an interview with a male interviewer and not mentioned baseball. remember, while experience and all that stuff is important, one of the most important things that an employer wants in an employee is someone they will like working with. anything that is on the light-side that hook them, is a benefit, regardless if it has anything to do with job skills.

I have an 'Interests' line on my resume, but it can change depending on who's going to read it.

In that section, right after 'design and fabrication', I have 'vintage automobile restoration'. You know, fancy way of saying I restore old cars. I almost took it out but then I realized that it's an interest that carries with it certain skills. Turns out a potential employer/client (strange I know, but that's sorta the deal) is involved with vintage racing. That spurned more conversation about abilities and, as a result, I'll be meeting with the HNIC again very soon.

My recommendation is to include interests that signify skills you may have or gain as a result, THEN add other things on the 'light-side' along the line's of what jer said.

i dont write a "hobbies" section, I just include an "interests" so its vague enough to cover just about anything. Any relevant things, such as photography and some charity events that I've done, i try to include. Also if you've written anything or had anything published. Something that says you're slightly more than a suit and tie

I've never thought of putting hobbies in a resume. I don't know why it would cross anyone's mind to do so.

I can't figure out what the point of doing that is. It drives me crazy. I can't imagine an employer thinking "well this guy is qualified, but he likes to play video games. must be a slacker". Or the other way "Well, he doesn't have any experience flying a plane, but he goes to church, so god will guide him.

and it's not like any of you put your real hobbies down when you do choose to tell them *more* about yourself, because most of us like to get drunk and watch porn.

dont be fooled by the vibe you get in this forum. it might give the impression that 'most of us just like to get drunk and watch porn', but a lot of people have hobbies that would suggest that they are great for a certain job. if i were an employer i would want someone with varied interests. id build a team of people with real lives instead of the usual boring you get in pen pushing jobs. the problem with people of today is that many of them dont have interests other than spending money in their two days off. on many interviews the employer has been interested in what i do in spare time and often i get the impression that a conversation about one of my interests might have spun the interview in my favour.

I'm pretty sure the first part what he said was all personal, but the "hack the gibson" part is surely from Hackers

depending on the job.

its good to list hobbies such as sports to show u are active and healthy. also tells them that your body is fully functional and you are not disable.

for management type jobs team sports are good to show u can work in a team setting.

small things like that.
