Paul van Dyk - MELBOURNE (pg. 2)

^^ , the pics came out quite nicely considering how they normally turn out when they've been taken in a club. Nice one mate.

And yeah, big night. :)

I was there with a big group of people for once (even though half of them left before 4am - soft :p) and we were up for it from the word go. I was impressed with the warm-up dj's, who did a good job, especially the one playing from 11-12 (forget his name) who laid down a progressive set that stood up well on its own, and then they decided to interupt the "flow" to shoot that movie. Dunno how many of you will agree with me, but you can't really simulate a rave atmosphere like they were trying to do - they'd have been better off just filming the crowd during the first 30 mins of PvD's set. And who was that guy with the curly hair? Was he the actor from the movie or something? Was he actually spinning, or just pretending to? Ah well, it was something that I could have done without to be honest. Did you guys up the front get your faces on the screen btw?

Anyway, to PvD. When he eventually came on he was, needless to say, brilliant. Missed a chunk of 30 mins near the start (felt knackered - kinda regret dancing myself into the ground for the warm-up dj's now) and then left again briefly when he played the Corsten remix of Catch. When I came back in the second time (after about 10 mins outside) he'd picked up the pace again, and was playing some driving almost proggy stuff before he dropped The Riddle and Avenue back to back. You'd better believe we were jumping up and down and hugging each other for that little bit. :D

Then he reverted back to some more mellow trance music for while, which meant, during all the break downs, I was just standing there, head bopping and eyes closed, feeling all the lactic acid building up in my legs. Then the beat would drop, cue another 3-4 minutes of dancing, then another 2 minute break down where I'd start to feel my legs again. Kinda annoying, but that's one of the things you have to put up with when dancing to trance music though I guess. Beautiful stuff to listen to, but it means that it's kinda hard to get into any kind of a flow. Anyway, I'm talking . I enjoyed it regardless. ;)

And yeah, as stated earlier, he got it pumping again towards the end before suprising us all and finishing with something called "For an Angel"? Apparently it's famous or something. Certainly didn't see that one coming. ;)

But yeah. The man's technique is flawless. I was trying to spot the places in the set where he was mixing a new tracks in so I could explain to my mate how djing actually work. He was so smooth for the most part though, that it was bloody difficult to do. Track selection and the overall "flava" of the set was brilliant too. He varied it up a bit and kept everyone interested, while keeping the uplifitng vibe he's famous for. I can understand now why some people have been driven to tears at some of his sets. :)

The light-show was awesome too, with some of the best laser effects I've ever seen. The pyrotechnics succeeding in briefly scaring the living out of me too. :D

And, as usual the crowd, with some exceptions (namely the steroid-addled wankers who apparently paid 60 bucks to stand around posing shirtless, wobble around on the dancefloor for a bit and then start hitting on chicks), was simply brilliant. Melbourne knows how to have a good time. ;)

So yeah, another brilliant night.

Oh, and it was good to see Philby and Stipsy there again as well...... for all of about 15 seconds in the end. :D

Sorry fellas, I'll make more of an effort next time (who else is primed for Slinky then?). :)

Oh, and a slight tangent, but I thought some of you might like this.

I got home before anyone else in my house had gotten up (about 9.30) and went straight to bed. I slept all day, but had to wake up at four to go to work. I was just about to leave when my mum came into my room and noticed the glowsticks I'd bought on the night, just lying on my desk. She picked them up and asked:

"What are these?"

I was looking for my watch, and was in a bit of a rush to get to work at this point, so I was a bit on edge and couldn't really be bothered giving an explanation. So I just said something like: "Never mind, I'll explain it to you later."

She kept on looking at them, then this look of realisation swept across her face and she goes: "Are they...... drugs?"

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :D

Don't even MENTION glowsticks!!!! Some moron decided it would be a good idea to break open one of his and splash the contents everywhere!
It was all over the floor, not to mention our clothes and in Helen's hair and on her face, near her eyes. I didn't get that much on me myself but a few others copped it worse I think.
One of the songs I thought was one politics of dancing (we didn't ID it then) I think is 'Connector - Interference'. There was another one as well I haven't listened enough for it yet. I thought the very first thing he played sounded like helicopters so I thought it was 'Apache - Starfighter' but then the rest of the song didn't sound like it I thought, so maybe he played it like on Gatecrasher - Wet which just has the helicopters and then another song after. Or maybe I'm just wrong! :)
I realised after I was there for 2 hours that I left my Politics Of Dancing booklet at home instead of bringing it to get signed.... grrr

EDIT I knew I had heard one of the songs from the last Gatecrasher cd, we thought maybe it was on 'Experience' but it was 'Coast To Coast - Be With Me' which is actually on Digital.
