you really are behind on your current events... the Young Offenders Act was scrapped in 2000.
It was replaced by the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Under the Youth Criminal Justice children over the age of 14 that are charged with murder, attempted murder or aggravated sexual assault can be tried and sentenced as an adult. There`s also something in there about being tried as an adult for aggravated assault if they have 2 previous convictions for the same thing. |
my point had nothing to do with the name of the act..but everything to do with the fact that the system is too easy on offenders.
this new act imo is still a load of crap. like the old saying goes... you do the crime, you do the time.
what is astonishing is that this only applies to these 3 crimes...what about breaking & entering, robbery, major theft, various sexual crimes??? |

Casual bump led to subway shooting
May 08, 2008
Michele Henry
STAFF REPORTER
An underage man is in custody and police are looking for another young offender and an adult in connection with a the first shooting to occur inside a TTC subway car.
Detectives said this morning they have a court order to release the name of a 17-year-old they believe is linked to the March 28 shooting at Spadina Subway station, just as the doors on the westbound train were opening.
Warrants have been issued for Ibrahim Sadat, whose last known address was in Brampton, and for 20-year-old Emmaunuel Boakye, of no fixed address, for allegedly shooting an 18-year-old girl in the groin.
Detectives said the victim, her friend and the three suspects, who are all known to police, had never laid eyes on one another before, but started sparring when they first entered the subway car at St. George station.
The victim and the alleged shooter, a 17-year-old who was arrested at a probation office yesterday, merely bumped into one another on their way into the subway car.
"This was the last car in a series, there was an influx of people and a bottleneck," Det. Sgt. Myron Demikew said. "Unfortunately, that's what started it."
During the fight, which lasted until the train stopped at Spadina, the victim pulled out a pocket knife and many riders - there were about 30 or 40 people - pulled the passenger assistance alarm in the car.
The victim was shot in the groin and the bullet, detectives said, exited via her buttocks.
Officers said both suspects are wanted for attempted murder, for encouraging the shooter to pull out his firearm when they fight started.
