Holy crap, Normalizing audio

| Call me late, call me oblivious, but I just found out about normalizing audio. Here is what I think it is; it's a process used to maximize the sound of your whole track without clipping. It's disgusting how much better my songs sound now. I use Sony Sound Forge and normalize to -12db I believe. |

| Heh, normalizing the audio just means increasing the volume to 0dB (or sometimes -3dB). :) |

There really is no place where normalizing your audio will be beneficial. If you need to normalize, your recordings are probably not hot enough.
I've done my fair bit of normalizing too, but I've quit doing it. |

| It's just raising/lowering the peak level to a user defined amount. |

| is it better than any other maximizers? |

It's different, and depending on the results you want it could be better to use a maximizer or to do normalization. A maximizer normally has a built in compressor/limiter which compresses the audio signal and then amplifies it. So in the end the differences in dynamics will be smaller and the average volume will be louder.
Normalizing keeps the original dynamics intact and just amplifies the audio signal. |

Hey Dood, not to thread jack, but I jammed your Minerva remix this sat at my gig in Hollyweird, it rocks. Keep it up.
Regarding normalization, I agree with the above. The normalization process isn't intelligent at all. You could have one ambient acoustical anomaly that spikes in your track and the whole track would normalize off that one point in time. not the best way to go. If you're buying decently mastered tracks, leave em as is. |
