University of Minnesota professor Roberta M. Humphreys estimates the radius of VY CMa at 1800 to 2100 solar radii. To illustrate, if our Sun was replaced with VY Canis Majoris, its surface would extend to the orbit of Saturn. Assuming the upper size limit of 2100 solar radii, light would take more than 8 hours to travel around the star's circumference.
Similarly, if a human could walk on the surface of Canis Majoris – assuming a speed of 5 km/h (3 mph) for 8 hours a day – the person would have to walk for 650,000 years to circle the star (compared with 2 years 11 months to complete the same task on the Earth, and 310 years 7 months on the Sun). |

Seriously now,
There's a good reason why I decided to pursuit a career in linguistics rather than in astrophysics — I really can't fathom the concept of being ridiculously smaller than a bunch of blazing particles that could easily fry everything I take for granted in a heartbeat. And, even if we accept the fact that star is gigantic, not only we cannot understand what it means for an object to be that big, its size is extremely tiny when compared to the distance between that star and us.
And that's the really scary bit. |

You forget the part that these thing will turn into superblack holes and destory hundreds if not thousands of other stars and systems

Only 5000 light years away... |

LOL yeah, and you won't know about it 5000 years.
isn't that awesome. the universe is so huge that happens all over the place and we find out like 100 years later. and are like, oh snap! |

That's way beyond my comprehension — I can imagine what happens when a fireball incinerates everything I know. But... I don't even know how to think about a black hole sucking whole planets.... |

No, out sun is way too small for that. It's meant to die in like another 4 billion years or something, but will never be as big as Antares. |

| oh I thought the sun was the biggest of them all. |
