So, im gona get a nice bonus in a couple of months and im going to spend it on upgrading my studio setup, as well as a JP-8000 i intend on purchasing the Jazzmutant Lemur.
http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_overview.php
Ive been looking into it in great detail, and despite its high price tag (1,600), it seems to be an amazing piece of kit.
I will be using it as a dj tool as well as a controller in my studio setup, and i dont think i will be dissapointed. Im going to travel to a nearby city to "try before i buy", but i suspect i will just fall in love with it!
Does anyone have any experience with the Lemur? or even the Dexter?
If so, what do you think of it? any bad points?
and for those of you who havent got one, if you had the money would you buy one?
or for the people who want to shout at me for spending that much money on a studio controller, do you recommend anything else? :P
Cheers ;) |

no.
there are way more important things i would buy.
i don't know why you would want a jp8000 either - their sound is thrashed and it's easily done in software anyway. i don't know anyone who still owns a JP... most have sold theirs a long time ago. i'd not bother with the lemur or jp8000 and get a virus ti, voyager or little phatty.
what kind of monitors do you have?

for djing? if in ableton, a bcr-2000 or novation remote zero. perhaps a xone3d if you can stretch. if you're using traktor or similar, i'd get a vestax vci-100.
lemurs are cool and everything, but they can't do much a normal controller can't, just in a different way. definately not worth the cost imo. |

The JP is on the cards as a friend of mine has one for sale on the cheap, obviously i would prefer the virus, but i currently have little experience with hardware synths, i think the JP is a good place to start, unless you can recommend anything else.
im getting new speakers also, im looking at Behringer TRUTH B3031A at the moment, there such a variety out there i havent quite decided on which ones to buy yet.
i DJ with ableton and i have seriously considered the Zone3D, but i decided against that as i would prefer something with more versatility in the studio, its great for DJ'ing, but i feel that other controllers can easily replicate what the 3D is capable of MIDI wise, which is one reason why i find the Lemur appealing.
ill take on board whats been said and look around before i fully commit myself to a Lemur :p |

if you don't mind the VST wrapper, novation remote sl zero is definately a good choice. it is as at home in the studio as it is on stage. ask anthony about his, he uses it for his live act stuff, with abletronz...
personally, i would get better monitors than that as a #1 priority.
i have only played with a jp8000 (8080) for a short while, but they seem like a one trick pony to me. you need to remember they were one of the earliest VA synths to be made... EVER.
ultimately, you need to choose what you find best for YOUR workflow. my oppinions are just based on what i would do with that money instead.

1,600 GBP = $3,200 US.
This is what I would get...
$1,000 Dynaudio BM5A
$300 Novation Remote SL Zero
$1,650 Virus TI
==========
$2950
IMO, this is WAY better than the alternative. |

i agree, i think better monitors are a priority, i should increase my budget for those. the Dynaudio BM5A's do look like a safe bet |

FYI awesome Ableton specific midi mixer designed by Ableton and Vestax together on the horizon ->
http://www.wiretotheear.com/2008/01...fic-controller/

Looks to be perfect, one of my mates getting one as soon as out, currently advertised priced is 399 which is about $798 which is before any shop price beating / discounts. :) |

that does look pretty nice actually, good investment for the Ableton Live DJ, not a bad price tag as well, i was expecting a horrific price tage. loving the LEDs down each side as well:p
But as for the studio, i cant see it being that useful bar controlling the channel faders with EQ and the odd effect.
If i was concentrating soley on the DJ aspect, then this would be on my to buy list, i would prob take this over the the 3D, especially due to the price difference. but as a dj/production cross over (which is what im currently looking for) then i think Novation Remote SL Zero would be better. |

i own a lemur. before you get one take some basic online tutorials with java so you can get used to parser coding the lemur. though you don't need to know coding to use it, it's very helpful that you do so you can build more advanced templates.
get a good sound card. now you can't build an endless amount of templates in it, it has a very limited memory space but then again, if you know parser/java it's WAY more than enough. get to know reaktor as well, i can't explain how rewarding it is to your sets. you can also build midi keyboards/step sequencers inside of it in minutes. very dynamic piece of equipment and over-all, s over mixers out on the market now depending on what you want to do. for me, since i do a lot of layering in my mixes, it's far better than the xone 3d, which i own as well.
the 3D is fine if you just want to do more basic ableton things and don't feel like learning much side coding. it's not like java is hard to learn anyway, plus jazzmutant has a whole load of tutorials/user submitted templates on their site for you to disect.
enjoy it by the way, and don't get frusturated. i did when i first got it because i lacked the ability to make anything advanced with it until i took some time and picked up the language little by little!
again as echo said, you need to decide whether this will suit your needs/the music you play.
p.s get the dexter if you're going to get a lemur for sure. so you can download dual-mode and use the lemurs firmware along side the dexters. i'm REALLY mad about JM screwing some people over as they announced they would release dual-boot mode for free but instead, lemur users had to pay an extra 400$ to upgrade to it while dexter users got it free. well, since they paid 400$ more than us in the first place :p |

Thanks for the advice :)
ive looked into the coding with the Lemur, and im sure i will pick it up relatively easily over time. the templates on the website look pretty useful, would be good to decipher them as you said.
ive been looking at the Dexter as well, i just cant decide if it would be worth getting one instead of the Lemur, i could get the Lemur and download dual mode if i need to at a later date.
but a few other options to spending 1,600 have been show to me, so i need to have a hard think
.............i still fancy the Lemur though! |
