hey, im going to be playing a 2hr house set after a top 40 dj.
i would expect that what ever track he/she is playing would have a very short outro and is probably in the bpm range of like 80-100 or perhaps slower ... who knows...
any recomendations for how i can work this? |

let his last tune play out entirely. then have a moment of silence and let everyone go "wtf!?" :wtf:
then start your house set with something that sounds ing great from the start.
that's how i would do it. |

i was thinking of doing something like that.....
im trying to decide whether i should start with the intro of the track or cut that out... and cue up to some beatless part of the incoming track....
decisions decisions....
have you experimented with either of those methods? |

if he is playing a long track, dont let it continue till end, people will be bored before you start. just turn off the turntable or use the same effect on cdj 800/1000.
start playing with a big hit which most of them are suppose to know or a nice remix of a well know song. |

i guess most hip hop/top 40 tracks are like 3 minutes long.... ish...
this actually would be my first club gig.... im not sure what kind of gear the top 40 dude will be using but there is a good possibility it won't be cdj 1000's
im debating whether or not i should bring my stuff....
i could just bring my mac with ableton and a midi controller
that way i will have good eq's and a filter to work with.....
lol... i love thinking out loud randomly on a thread.... |

You could always do an emergency cross fade if you had to. I'd find a good first track and start it anywhere other than the very begining because that will sound bad if it's just a bunch of simple beats.
Try Chromeo - Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix). (that one you actually could start from the very beginning). It's to a top 40 feel to it, yet different.
It's on my myspace in the link in my sig. |

| Just because he's a Top 40 DJ don't assume that he will end at 100bpm. I do this kind of gigs all the time, and most DJ's now play a broad range of music into their Top 40 sets including mashups. When I wanna transition from Top 40 into house, and if the DJ before me has a bpm of around 124, I play Pitbull - The Anthem. Everyone goes nuts cuz that song has been on fire. Reason I play that is because that song has the CALABRIA beat. So then, I mix it into house. |

yeah im not assuming anything
im expecting the unexpected
he could end his set at like 80bpm or 120 or whatever...
i just want to be prepared for the contingencies..... you know |

I have to do this every week. I find that it's best to start with a remix of a song everyone knows. (Here's a quick re-edit I put together last week that worked pretty well: http://www.djchrisbasiliere.com/Sma...ls%20Remix).mp3 ) Vocal tracks seem to make the transition seem more natural. I agree with what was mentioned about messing with the effects on the last track in the top-40 set. You can power-off the TT, do some back-spin, echo it out, etc.
Another thing like to do is go in with an house/breaks track every one knows. (i.e., something like Smack My Bitch Up or One More Time).
There is always a chance that the previous DJ will go out with something in the 120 BPM range. Most pop is built on an eight-beat loop anyway, so you can do fairly quick 32 or 64 beat mix and make it sound natural. If you do that, I recommend not starting at the very beginning of a house track because the intros are pretty simple and boring for the first minute.
Hope it works out for ya. |
