quote:

"Yuri's Night is an international celebration held on April 12 every year to commemorate the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, and the first Space Shuttle launch on April 12, 1981. In 2004, people celebrated Yuri's Night in 34 countries in over 75 individual events. Locations have included Los Angeles, Stockholm, Antarctica, the San Francisco Bay Area, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and the International Space Station.

The goal of Yuri's Night is to increase public interest in space exploration and to inspire a new generation of explorers. Driven by space-inspired artistic expression and culminating in a worldwide network of annual celebrations and educational events, Yuri's Night creates a global community of young people committed to shaping the future of space exploration while developing responsible leaders and innovators with a global perspective. These global events are a showcase for elements of culture that embrace space including music, dance, fashion, and art.

Yuri's Night was created by Loretta Hidalgo, George T. Whitesides and Trish Garner. The first Yuri's Night was held on April 12, 2001, but its counterpart, known as The Cosmonautics Day (Russian: День Космонавтики), was established in the Soviet Union in 1962.

The 2004 event in Los Angeles was attended by over 100 prominent space leaders including author Ray Bradbury, space tourist Dennis Tito, X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis, *NSYNC's Lance Bass and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura from the original Star Trek series). The event was followed by a large party with 2 dance floors and world-class DJs.

The 2007 event in the San Francisco Bay Area was located at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA. This particular instance of Yuri's Night, while notable for the quality of the artistic installations, technology demonstrations, and DJ music continuing through dawn of the following day, further distinguished itself by taking place in an aircraft hangar of a national research park that is otherwise not accessible to the public.

Yuri's Night is a Space Generation Advisory Council event."

My g/f's pops runs the place, so I gotta kinda behave myself lol.

Ah well, I guess no late-night rampages through the interactive and laser areas for this guy.

So being as i dont live in TO, I would have to do WILLCALL to get the $20 advance tickets off Wanttickets.com...

Should it be fairly straight forward to get tickets this way when arrive at the door with my creditcard in hand?

'Picking tickets up at the venue' options often leave me skeptical about whether it'll be organized and easy to get them and get in, or if it'll be complicated and a real headache.

(man, wish i lived in TO, woudlnt need to have this concern then)

Although I would still go if I was here, I agree with you about the promotion thing. This party doesn't seem to be well promoted at all.

for a party not well promoted (in the music boards/scene) they seem to be doing quite well. i've been monitoring tickets sales and they're sold out at most of the outlets and i'm guessing the final batch is on sale right now on wantickets. there are a lot of ppl who keep up-to-date with newmindspace events and that was probably enough. keep in mind this not a music event but a commemoration of yuri's achievement.

yes, jamie you can put me down +2 :)

Re: promoting, we haven't gone all out because our capacity is capped at 1000 by the Science Centre and we are almost certainly going to sell out of tickets.

Arrive early!
