i always remember fergie played something that sounded like a ballad in the MIDDLE of his global gathering set in 2005 (was on essential mix i think). then again that was probably the worst set i've ever had the displeasure of having to put up with
i think it can work in the context of a mix cd, not really something i'd enjoy in a club though |

| I'd like to hear a set that played "Anthem" backwards at double speed as the closing track. |

Perhaps if you're a warm-up DJ, although it's highly likely nobody will care at the very start of the night. I don't think a peak-time DJ would take the tempo down like that.
It can work on compilations and stuff like Essential Mixes. There's an old EM where John Digweed opened with some Young American Primitive and it makes for a nice start. |

Agreed. If it's four to the floor from beginning to end I get bored. I love ambient intros (or outros). Obviously it's all about timing, but bringing down the tempo can work beautifully if done right. |

One of my best memories when it comes to good set-intros is from
DJ Taucher - Clubnight 2000-11-11.
Taucher starts off with a really nice classic piece and it floats wonderfully into his own Pictures of a Gallery.
The entire set is really nice. Excellent track selection. I remember I got that set and other Clubnight sets from a german guy who had some nice DAT reciever or something. So the recording quality was excellent of those sets. Almost like CD. I'll probably go down to my basement soon and dig them up again just for the sake of memories.
Oh and the tracklist:
Alexander Skryabin - Andante Cantabile From Poeme No. 1 op 52 (Extra - EX 10119)
Taucher - Pictures Of A Gallery (Scuba - 009)
Anderson, Hall & Shave - Inside (Sounds Good - SG 020)

I mean not only ballad, soft music.
I think that it makes the start or the end of the set more emotive.
Songs like the soft edit of "Martin Roth - Off the world" are very goods for starting a set... |
I don't think that would be a good choice to open a set with. Maybe the Super8 & Tab remix of it though? I think its ok to open/close with a soft track but it should be uplifting at the same time. For example Above and Beyond - good for me. |
