Speaker musings

Ok I wasnt sure where to post this.

I'm thinking of getting a new computer soon once I start earning. I've got the parts decided (to a degree) but havent a clue about speakers.

Of course I can get generic PC ones, but I dont think they do EDM justice.

Any speakers out there that TAs would consider good for both games and music? And that hopefully connect with this soundcard?

Would reasonably standard studio monitors connect to that sound card, out of interest?

Incidentally, would anyone on here recommend any of these speakers (the place where I'll probably be getting the computer from)????

Thx :D

Are you looking to have 5.1 surround sound or stereo? Musicians prefer to mix in stereo, but 5.1 is better for gaming -- so that's the first choice to make. Also, give us an idea for your budget so we know what we have to work with.

You can theoretically connect any speakers to any sound card, it's just a matter how many adapters you want to use. You'll probably want to get powered speakers so you don't have to buy an amp.

I've got an amp at the moment that is almost completely broken, so I dont mind whether I have one or not. But since its cheaper without an amp I'd prob go for that.

Ideally I'd go for 5.1 for gaming. I'm not sure about price (+ everything electronic costs extra in Ireland) but throw stuff at me thats under about €300 if possible. :D
DiscoStew
I don't know how much it costs in Ireland, but I HIGHLY recommend Klipsch speakers for a computer system. In particular, the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system sounds phenomenal and goes for about $350 here in the states. I'd avoid Logitech speakers, they sound like e to me.

I have ALWAYS wanted a Klipsch system, I've heard so much good stuff about them, especially the Promedias. Pricy buggers though, we're talking about €400 for them I'd reckon. Might be worth it tho :D

Loads of PC speakers sound though, thats the problem. They put too much into the subs and have only tiny satellites with no power to them. Ive heard nothing but good Klipsch reviews. They're fairly good for music as well?
DiscoStew
Yep. Crystal clear audio. The low end is lacking a bit, but best packaged system for the price IMO.

I have the logitech z5550's and they ing are sick as hell.
Listening to music I switch it to only the front two + sub, during games, 5.1. Sometimes during music I'll play it on 5.1 but 2.1 is more respected.

DiscoStew brings up a good point. As most music (if not 95% of what you'll hear) is mixed only with 2 channels in mind. Then 5.1 is a bit overkill as the source your listening from is not true 5.1, which brings the debate up does 2.1 with songs sound better over 5.1, which in most cases is yes I'd say.

Before you get any speakers do a google search on them, there's a couple good sites out there that do pretty thorough reviews.

Klipsch are really nice speakers but highly expensive and there are packages that come close to their quality, id say they are the best but you don't have to get them, you'll be equally happy buying something a little less pricey.

Come to think of it, the only systems I would recommend are these;

for 5.1
Logitech Z5500
ProMedia Ultra 5.1

2.1
ProMedia 2.1

Seriously though, if you are gaming and watching moves on your pc, grab yourself a set of some 5.1 speakers. You need it. I wouldn't be gaming with 2.1, just wouldn't be as good.

As for connectivity, its almost always connected by 3.5mm (headphone plug sie). Your speaker set will have 3 wires, sub/center (orange), front (black) and rear (teal?) and your sound card will have these three inputs + mic, line in. No adapters or anything.

Sometimes it's connected via optical and even more rare coax.

Also, if your ordering online, see if you can find a cheaper price (almost always can, i saved about 200 dollars on my z5500s by googling) and seeing if where your buying from will price match.

Don't even look at 7.1, complete waste.

You might be able to find the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for cheap like $100, they've been around for 7 or 8 years so maybe a new replacement conversion is coming and they're blowing them out. I noticed they dropped the price here a couple of months ago (from $200 to $100) but maybe all gone now.

Same with Logitech Z-2300 around here, same price drop, but they don't have a tweeter and the Klipsch does so it should sound better and most reviews confirm that.
THE_Chris
Thanks a mil :D

Will def be going 5.1, I've had 2.1 for games for the past 10 years and its bugging me now, the only reason I havent upgraded earlier is because I have no space for the rear speakers, unless I want to put them in the bed.

I'll scout around for some Klipschs and keep an eye on the Z5500s.

I have Logitech Z2300s and for the price they are easily the best bang for the buck, tweeter or not IMO.

Edit: for 2.1
