my laptop was starting to cut out and freeze so i decided to completely wipe it..ive reinstalled windows and have started fresh with the laptop..however, cubase seems to be taking up an unbelievable amount of cpu..i thought by doing this my computer would get faster but it seems the opposite...even when cubase is idle, and i view the vst performance chart, the meter is flying up and down..when i open old projects, they wont play at all as the cpu is through the roof..before i restarted system they would have...is cubase not using all my pc resources or what could be the problem??? |

We need to know a little more information. First of all, what OS are you running? XP? Was it XP before and still is XP? Since you have re-installed everything on your laptop, did you find the necessary drivers for all of the devices? It is highly unlikely that XP had all of your laptop's drivers in its base install. Go into Device Manager and see if you have any yellow question marks or exclamation points. If so, what are they? You need to find the drivers for all of those devices. Also have you downloaded the chipset drivers for your laptop? Is it Intel or AMD? Basically it sounds like you are missing a crucial driver and I'm pretty sure from the way you are describing things, you are missing the chipset driver package. |

Have you tried installing this "driver" for your soundcard? |

What soundcard do you have? I've heard people report a similar sounding problem (CPU load spikes when idle) with certain firewire soundcards (off the top of my head TC Konnekt 24). |

im using m-audio connectiv..my laptop sound card is sigma tel i think...isd there any setting in cubase that restricts the amount of power it uses?? |

Well I googled 'M Audio Connectiv CPU Load' and it returned a few comments which were sort of interesting. One comment was a guy saying the software was eating 15-20% CPU load but the database took ages to load. He said he would be happier if it ate like 50% load if the database loaded faster. Zoinks.
Have you tried disconnecting the Connectiv and stopping any M-Audio system tray processes? Try it with just your onboard laptop soundcard and see if you still get CPU load spikes. |

Sigh.
CPU/Performance Problems Thread
On a side note, if your driver latency is set low, you WILL see the CPU meter fluctuating even when stopped, as long as you have a few plugins loaded. Actually, that happens anyway, but you just don't see it on higher latencies because it tends to average out. |
