Ive never seen one, and truthfully i dont think i do need to see one. I donbt have depression or am mentally unstable and I am not going through a huge crisis in my life, however I'm just mostly curious as to what its like and have a load i'd like to get off my chest. I come from an oldschool fam so their moto is just shut the up and deal with it. and i know alot of ppl like to come on here and spill there problems too a bunch of strangers on the internet but i dont see that as being therapeutic.

so let me ask what actually goes behind those doors? do you just talk to some person and everything you say they keep overanalyzing it like you see in tv?

I've been to a couple psychiatrists before. Most of them will just prescribe you pills after anywhere from five to thirty minutes of conversation and complaints on your part; this is based on my own experience and that of a few friends.

Psychologists are a bit different; they tend to listen to you better and ask questions that might be helpful. Of course, they can't prescribe you anything since they don't (usually) have an MD, but sometimes they'll recommend that you see a psychiatrist who will prescribe it.

It sounds like what you're looking for is a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist.

Can you do this with family or friends? If not then sounds like you need one

Its always good to talk and express emotions, talk to the people who are putting these stresses in your life.

In some sense it is, or else people would not do it. They get a feeling of not being judged by strangers.

Well that is what you hired them for no? to analyze you. However if you tell them what the problem is, they will help you hopefully resolve it.

Sounds like you want and need to talk to a psychologist. Its nothing bad, nor a sign of weakness.

+1.

Never been to a psychiatrist myself, but psychologists are quite nice. Sure, you can vent to friends and/or "man up", but what psychologists do is something else entirely, and the psychologist does expect you to man up anyway :p

No shrinks, but I did see a psychologist to get an ADHD diagnosis so I could have a monthly amphetamine script

"The Wizard" as I call Psyciatrists or MH specialists are great if you need them. We are forced to undergo mandatory mental health screens each month or after any significant incident.

I'd feel WAY more comfortable going of my own free will tho.

Its just the same back home, any time my ambulance crew handles a fatality or mass casualty or something else gnarly, they make us go see the wizard there too.

I guess my point is they are great if you need them, but not if you are pressured into it. Every man must prepare himself amnd deal with his own his own way I think.
