can't believe there are no reviews on this.
1st part of his set was great... nothing too special, just enough to get us dancing.. up untill that disaster live vocal set of Robert owens showed up. I think the 3/4 of the dancefloor left and headed to the other room. all I have to say is WTF was that all about?
the following 3 hours - Lawler took me on one of the wildest rides I've ever been on. track after track, he controlled us like a puppet master.
overall sick night!!
some pics to come.. |

There is a review somewhere... maybe in the existing Lawler thread.
Some people thought it wasn't as good as last year. I had a blast both years. The Owens thing did suck but it gave us a nice break. We went to other room and prepared ourselves for the rest of his set. The guy on after Lawler was pretty sick but he just brought the energy down too much so we left. I'll be back next year, no doubt.
Here is a cool review cclem sent me...
| quote: | The reigning monarch of the world of dark house could not have added a better ambience to Lights Out, by far the most absorbent and “euro” evening thus far at conference. Given a quick glance around the venue an overwhelming feeling of being at an underground KGB party in the basement of a posh Castle in Prague on New Years Eve could only be further exemplified by the vast diversity of the audience. It would not have been a surprise to see satan walking around in an Armani suit drinking Grey Goose on the rocks out of the holy grail.
With every dissident melody incorporated into the mix, Lawler masterfully controlled every element of this neo-goth 1920s themed experiment into a slight hint of confident German Noir. This experience would be Fritz Lang’s wet dream complete with four mannequin-esque dancers overlooking the roped off and mostly empty VIP. The juxtaposition of the Spectroscope projections and the crystal chandelier crowning the venue couldn’t have been a better materialized expression of the moment. Park West was positively evil in the best possible and hedonistic way. |

LOL
I missed Lawler this year, went to go see Yousef but last year he was A++++++++.
Great line.....

sex behind the decks, for me anyways!!! i told him that too when he was done, pure sex behind the decks. got a big hug and kiss(on the cheek) from that one, lol. but i love lawler. i'm always happy to see him!!!! last year was pure ectasy, this year was great, just missing that something that was there last year!!!
audiofly tagged with steve the last hour or so which was cool!!! i stayed until 7:30 am when steve finished up and i got to talk to him for a bit. he was so funny b/c when he saw me he came over and we started talking and he was like, i really tried to go in this year with dark and tribally and started talking about the tracks he chose. every conversation with him is so enlightening. always so very nice and appreciative when i talk to him.
he is my favorite dj to watch mix, unfortunately the dj booth is too high and doesn't allow the fans to watch that but i've had the pleasure many times in LA to be close enough to watch the master at work. he did drop a ton of great tracks that were dark and deep and tribal and just sent shivers up your spine.
it did suck to have that break with the singer but steve came back in and stepped it up a notch b/c he saw what happened and knew he needed to bring the energy back up. it wasn't as crowded as last year but you have to realize that last year was on a wednesday with fewer parties to compete with and this year it was on thursday and a ton of parties to compete with. and the recession hasn't helped matters either. but i was glad for it b/c last year i didn't have any room to dance and this year that's all i did from start to finsih.
so great to meet new TA's as well, epdarks and his girl pam, greg, knittybone (tyler) and i was there with ryan (rounder19). bummed i missed raven, next year for sure!!! met treefermadness but not until the next night but he was there. i had a blast at this party, it didn't disappoint me at all. last year was a pretty tall order to live up to so i went in knowing that i shouldn't compare the sets and so therefore i wasn't unhappy. i just truly feel that steve lays down some of the sexiest house my ears have had the pleasure of hearing, imo. with every set he continues to inspire me and move me and bring a smile to my lips and i'm just happy being there dancing to his music and getting lost in his sexy, dark and sometimes scary tracks that he drops. and of course give me a hard badass baseline anytime and i go crazy!!!!
the new set up of parkwest was amazing!!! beautiful, tons of bars so you never have to wait. when i first walked in i was like oh wow, this all different and a bouncer overheard me and gave me a quick tour of the place. i was like that was way nice. and the bartenders were super nice and quick as well. the sounds system was great, they still have that phazon system, yes???? i love the led wall behind the decks and the set up was nice!! very nice club indeed.
was a great way to start out yet another wonderful conference. i'll go to steve's party every year!!!! i'll be the happy, dancing girl down front loving life :tongue2 |

The system did not appear to be the same Phazon system as last year. The speakers were different. The sound was excellent no doubt, but why mess with greatness? The system last year was out of control. Oh well, I hear the club is being hooked up even more for a re-opening this month. Should be interesting.
Sarah, I didn't realize you were such a huge Lawler fan. Very cool. |

Yup, had a good time Lawler night but it certianly didn't live up to last year. The vocalist, Robert Owens, was a buzz kill. it just seemd out of place. We thought the sound system was much better last year. It just seemed louder this year but not a "better" louder. I wonder what happened to that amazing sound system and who tweaked this one ?
Definitely not as crowded as last year. |

i know why i liked his set more last year cuz he spun more tech house & this year it seemed like he played a lot more hard techno!
i agree, i have never had a worse buzz kill than the live vocals by Robert Owens (aka Seal by all of our friends)
i felt really bad, cuz i had hyped him up to my friends, even telling them the story on how he was my fave DJ back in 05, then slowly progressed into not liking him as much based on his new musical tastes
then last year he totally renewed my faith & i was back this year for some of the sickness from last years set, but nope!
i was disappointed! but hey, its just my opinion! if he wouldnt have played so hard i mightve enjoyed it more. the tracks didnt seem to have the "groove" like the tracks from last year
oh well, ill check him out here in LA if... i get comped into Avalon/Vanguard for that nite |

My wife and I love techno and even minimal techno but it didn't seem that was the best techno to us. Yeah, we were calling him a wannabe Seal but I felt bad for saying that because he was singing his heart out but a buzz kill nonetheless.
We also hyped him up to all our friends and it was just a bit of a let down. It was the only night I had prepaid for a table and I almost felt like a fool having the only table in the whole place but at least were were comfortable. There were so many competing parties that night such as the Minus 10 yr anniv and Get phyical. hmmm. I also made my Swedish friend miss Eric Prydz on the Space terrace so I do wonder if I mae the right decison.
Lawler has been playing some fierce sets. He was great on the beach at BPM in Mexcico this past Jan so I don't know what happened WMC night. Of course we're just being a little over critical, but it wasn't the same as last year. I think too many competing parties, but missing that certain something and/or that groove. Overall, most people that I talk to loved him back in his tribal days don't like him as much any more. We like tribal but really like how he incorporates the minimal tech house and the slowly builds and just blows up into that serious groove.
Yup, really thinking about coming to LA for that night. Avalon is one of my favorite clubs in the world. Still don't really know what his problem was with Vanguard, though. May also go see him in Toronto. We shall see.
Anybody know the name of that jungle animal noise sounding track? It came sometime after he played the Dig. |
