Comb filtering, potentially. That would be most apparent at half wavelengths equal to the difference in distance which is approaching frequencies of 2kHz or so... depend on orientation. (decimeter half wavelength is at about 1600Hz) At those frequencies there most likely won't be enough dispersion for there to be a great enough magnitude reflecting at that angle from the desk. (Wait... it's 4am and I just realized that the reflection would behave as a 'fixed end' and would therefore put it back 180* so it would be one full wavelength deltaD with the reflected path having a phase change so double the frequencies I said... or I'm wrong about that too... or I like beer. yeah, I like beer)
At least that's the way I justify it! :tongue2 |

If by angle of the monitors, you mean why are they facing inwards towards me? They are near field monitors so they should be pointing directly at my head - where I sit. The corners of the room will be filled in with solid Fibrex 1240 rock wool insulation in the near future - superchunk bass traps.

i was referring to the equilateral triangle positioning of your monitors. according to michael paul stavrou, the equilateral method is alright in an anechoic chamber, or in rooms with perfect acoustics, but it falls down untreated room environments. good stuff |

stavrous method is a bit subjective though, isn't it? one mans sweet spot could be another mans dead zone! :p
seriously though, if done right, yes his method is the obviously better than the generic equilateral triangle... but the problem with stav's method is that it requires you to have some kind of super modular setup where you're not limited by space and furniture. i mean, if your desk is 120cm wide, but you get the ghost image at 140cm, what can you do? what if you move house/room? have to buy new furniture again? it's easier to just go the equilateral triangle and hope it sounds ok haha.
you know the funny thing though... i was looking to buy a new desk a few weeks ago. i checked out all the expensive audio-specific workstations and not a single one would allow you to have your monitors at an equilateral triangle. figure that out! :wtf: |

Well, regardless of all the theory, my main objective was to make the room into a better mixing environment. By putting all the treatments at the first reflection points, its made a HUGE difference. And, by using the optimal air gap behind the panels, I also benefit from trapping bass frequencies as well.
The panels on the wall to ceiling corners are specifically for bass frequencies. My superchunks (coming soon) will help attenuate much more bass.
I know a small room like this (12.833 ft x 13.5 ft x 9 ft high) is not the ideal room due to all the modes that exist in it, but I had to make do with what I had. I could convert my garage into a nice studio, but then where would I do all my wood working. As mentioned before, its about compromise. I'm sure there may have been some better ways to do this, but based on my own research and the help of others, this is what I came up with. It will suit me just fine. |

sounds like some industry bias or more likely a lack of demand. why dont you make some stands? its cheap, easy, and if you move house, placement wont be so much of an issue. i was forced make mine because each of my monitors weighs about 45kgs. The stands are fairly industrial but they tighten up the bass end very nicely (3 metal pipes filled with sand). i was using my desk beforehand which is about 2m long so finding the ghost wasn't a problem, but when i was dealing with kick/bass, my desk was resonating ridiculously loudly. especially because i haven't actively treated my room.

i realise that the monitor thing went off topic a little. i was just curious. all in all it looks like you ve done a tremendous job. mixing a little bit closer to the void must be sweet. |

i bought the parts and had an english guy make them for me who had done a few custom jobs before. i was happy to hear that he knew that 2 or more pipes (preferably welded together) is a lot better than one to stop resonance. the tweeters sit perfectly at my ear level and the vectors paint a pretty picture with the black light at nighttime when im tweaking around. now that i can use my desk again, the next thing that needs to be done is some serious room treatment. anyone got any thought on which acoustic resonances should be dealt with first in this world of compromise? |

priority:
front (early) reflections
side (early) reflections
bass (rear corners)
late reflections
bass (front corners)
since your monitors are front ported, i dont think you should have too much problems with reflections off the window. |

in my old setup i used to have stands, but not anymore. i am very limited in space and, doing uni, i need all the desk space i can get. atm, monitor stands are a waste of space, which could be better used for books. :) |
